1. Tests 50%
2. Mastery Checks 30%
3. Class work 20%
4. Semester Exams (cumulative) 20%

Objective: In Grade 6, students will learn four basic skills: (1) developing understanding of and applying
proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with
expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric
constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface
area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. This course may be the most
common entry-level course for students who have had a rich and varied elementary level mathematics program.
It expands upon basic algebraic concepts previously acquired and integrates those principles with everyday life.
The processes of problem solving, reasoning, communication and making connections are emphasized.

Classroom Format: This class will not look like your typical math class. The student will be at the center of
the learning instead of the teacher. Students will progress through this course as he/she masters each standard
and demonstrates this mastery to the teacher at an 80% proficiency level. Students will not progress at the same
rate. If a student does not show mastery, he/she will work with the classroom teacher to gain a better
understanding of the skill/concept until it is mastered. Internet access in the home would be ideal, but not
required.

Classroom Procedures: http://mathclms.weebly.com
1. Students will take notes over each lesson on their own time. Students can watch videos at home or
during seminar via the Math website we have developed.
2. Students must take notes over each lesson in their composition book and show this to their classroom
teacher. The notes will be submitted to the teacher along with the completed practice problems.
3. If a student has not watched the video, he/she will be required to watch it in class.
4. Students must use pencil to do their math assignments.
5. Practice problems will be assigned from the text book.
6. All work must be shown, including writing each question.
7. Upon completion of the practice problems, students may attempt the mastery check of the current
section.
8. Before progressing onto the next skill in the unit, students must show 80% proficiency. If he/she scores
below an 80% on the mastery check, he/she will have to meet with the teacher to determine other
strategies to gain understanding of the current skill.
