Guidelines for Writing the Admission Application Statement of Purpose

Applicants to the Ph.D. program in the College of Communication and Information are required
to submit a Statement of Purpose. The statement should be double-spaced and not exceed 1,000
words. It will be assessed for fit with the mission and priorities of the Kent State University
College of Communication and Informations Ph.D. program. It should address the following:
Why you intend to pursue a Ph.D., including your academic goals and your short-term
and long-term career and professional goals;
Your proposed area of study and research interests, including what theories, topics,
problems and/or research areas you want to investigate as part of your Ph.D. program;
CCI faculty research agendas of interest to you; and specific CCI faculty members with
whom you would like to work;
How your background, interests and academic preparation relate to your proposed area of
study and research interests; and
How completing the CCI Ph.D. at Kent State will help you to realize your professional
and career objectives.
