Welcome to Math 6 Extended!

This syllabus will answer many of your questions about how this class works - what you need to bring
to class, how youll be graded, and just some general classroom procedures that will make the class run
smoothly. Please read through it with your parent or guardian.

What do I bring to class?
Required Supplies (BRING EVERYDAY!)
1) Bulldog Binder
2) Pencil & Eraser
3) Great Attitude
4) Scientific Calculator ** (optional)
The district recommended calculator for
all classes through geometry is the Texas
Instruments TI-30XIIS.

I have class sets of rulers, protractors, and
compasses. You do not need to buy these
items.
How will I be graded?

Students in 6
th
grade will be evaluated
using traditional letter grades. The
following grading scale will be used:

90 % -100 % = A

80 % - 89 % = B

70 % - 79 % = C

60 % - 69 % = D

59 % or less = F

What will we learn?

This course will cover the 6
th
Grade Math Common Core standards at a slightly faster pace and with
increased rigor. Students will be expected to demonstrate mastery of skills and an advanced level of
application to extend learning. Students will be taught tools to persevere through problem solving.

Students will:

use rates, ratios, and proportional reasoning.
develop computational fluency and operational understanding with whole numbers,
decimals, fractions, and integers.
write, interpret, and use expressions and equations.
build on previous understanding of Geometric concepts like area, surface area, and
volume.
develop an understanding of statistical thinking.

How often will we have quizzes?
We will have quizzes frequently throughout the
year. You will know in advance, and we will
review for the quizzes both in class and with
review homework assignments.
How often will we have homework?
We will have 2-3 new home practice
assignments each week. Please follow these
guidelines for your work.

1) WRITE IN PENCIL.

2) SHOW YOUR STEPS.

3) DO YOUR BEST.

Home practice philosophy:

I believe independent practice is necessary to
master skills in mathematics. My goal is to
assign just enough problems for mastery and
not too many it becomes tedious.

I believe practice problems are for practice. I
will correct all homework for accuracy and will
allow unlimited opportunities to re-do
assignments. Extra copies can be found in my
classroom in the blue crate or on Blackboard.

Please notify me if you are consistently spending
more than 30 minutes on math practice each
night. My intention is to keep home practice
around 15-20 minutes in length.

One last thing

Lawrence Public Schools implemented the
Common Core State Standards in 2013.
Common Core Math Standards emphasize
teaching students the ability to:

persevere through problem solving.
collaborate with other students.
communicate reasoning both verbally
and in written format.
make connections between math
concepts to form a unified
understanding of mathematics.
What if Im absent?
If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to ask
for missed assignments. The assignments for
the week will be posted on the rear whiteboard.

Some activities, quizzes, and tests will have to be
made up after school.

Where can I get extra help?
Mrs. Aldridge -- I am available most days before
school (7:30-8:00) and after school in my
classroom (Room 402) until 4:00. Feel free to
drop in anytime, but I cannot guarantee that I
will be in my classroom unless you make
arrangements ahead of time.

Cafeteria after school --Para-educators are
available to tutor students after school in the
cafeteria until 3:45.

Blackboard Blackboard will have many video
tutorials and examples problems available for
each Unit we study.

Mrs. Aldridges Website - tutorials & practice
games can be found on my website:
Aldridge-math@weebly.com

How often will we have tests?
Tests will follow major units of study and will
be lengthier than quizzes. I will review for
each test and will be available before and
after school for extra help. If you are absent
on test day you will need to make
arrangements with me to make up the test. I
do not usually allow students to make up a
test during math class but we can coordinate
a time during Guided Studies, before school,
or after school.
