Academic Syllabus

Welcome to MGLA:
Hello, my name is Miss Alexander. This year I will be teaching kindergarten through 4th grade elementary art.
Please read the information below as it applies to your students learning and what is expected of them in my
classroom throughout the school year. I look forward to spending time with your child and fostering their
creativity through the visual arts.
Class content:
The elementary art curriculum follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Studys essential standards for
visual arts. Lessons are age appropriate and provide visual literacy, contextual relevancy, and critical response.
Global connections:
Students will learn to recognize how visual arts are used in customs and traditions of various cultures. They will
be able to identify images in art as depicting something historic. They will understand that art is a reflection of
the artists ideas, environment and resources from various communities around the world.
Required materials:
Unless there is a special requested for a particular art project, all materials are provided for the students. Hand
sanitizer, tissues, baby wipes, Clorox wipes and Band-Aids are always needed if you are interested in donating
these items to the art room.
Daily preparation and communication:
All students are expected to abide by the art room rules and expectations, as well as the rules and regulations
found in the student handbook that applies to behavior, attendance, safety, respect, responsibility, and
consequences. There is no eating or drinking in the art room (unless its a special occasion that has been
approved by the teacher in advance).
Grading:
Elementary art grading is done objectively through daily assessments. As a class, we discuss the grading rubrics
for each project at the beginning of the project. This rubrics list all of the criteria that the student will be
evaluated by, and the point value for each category. Other informal assessments are done on a regular basis
throughout the school year. This helps determine future class activities and assignments, as well as to help gage
student understand and comprehension of the visual arts.
