Reading is an essential skill in the study of all subjects. Unfortunately, in todays
technologically driven world, any of our students seldo even !ick u! a book other than those books s!ecifically assigned in the classroo. Because reading is so i!ortant, the "nglish De!artent at Bailey #unior $igh utili%es the &ccelerated Reading !rogra in our reading and "nglish classes. 'his !rogra allows a child to choose books fro a list of thousands of fictional and non(fictional books written at varying degrees of difficulty to eet the needs of all students. )nce the child has finished the book, he then takes a short, ulti!le choice test over the content of the book. *f he !asses the test, he is awarded !oints based on the test score. Because the students are reading ore, their skills increase. 'his is substantiated through our reading test scores. "ach si+ weeks, students at Bailey are re,uired to accuulate !oints for their -th grade "nglish.reading and /th grade "nglish classes. 0tudents in the Pre(&P "nglish classes are re,uired to earn 12 !oints and students in regular "nglish.reading classes are re,uired to earn 13 !oints. &t the end of the third week !eriod, the teachers will convert these !oints into a grade in their classes. 4or e+a!le, if a student is re,uired to have 13 !oints, and he accuulates 13 or ore, he will receive a 133 for his &R grade. *f the student only earns /.5 !oints, he would receive a test grade of /5. )ccasionally, we have students who choose not to !artici!ate or who wait until the last inute and then are unable to co!lete their book and therefore, their &R test. *f a student has no !oints, he will receive a %ero for the &R grade. 6ith this in ind, we encourage you to check with your child fre, uently to ake sure he is kee!ing u! with the needed !oints. )n a final note, several ties a year, we will be faced with students cheating on &R testing !rocedures. 7heating includes a student having soeone else take a test for hi, giving the answers to a test to another student, receiving answers to a test , and taking a test for soeone else. B)'$ students are considered to be cheating. &ny student caught cheating on &R tests will lose all accuulated !oints for that grading !eriod. 'he student will not have the o!!ortunity to try to earn new !oints8 therefore, he will receive a %ero for the &R grade. *f a child is having difficulty with &R tests, he needs to s!eak to his teacher so that the teacher can hel! the student deterine the !roble. 6orking together, all students can be successful with the &ccelerated Reading !rogra.
