In the dawning era of massive restrictions on the use of fossil fuels,
which are clearly required by carbon's e!ect on the climate, the
green revolution is going to prove to have had extremely bad e!ects, by vastly increasing the use of fossil fuels by agriculture. The green revolution has also massively increased the use of pesticides and herbicides, causing (1) the deaths of many farm workers (!), (2) the poisoning of very many ecosystems, and (3) human cancer, endocrine disruption, and other health problems on a massive, unknown scale. The unknowable dangers of disrupting the Earth's genetic heritage, through the reckless use of Genetic Engineering, are potentially massive--and the science fails to reasonably allay this concern. It is extremely important to recognize the vast and pressing limits of science. GMO's, as currently employed, are an attempt to become more e"cient exploiters of the biosphere, as was the so-called green revolution, when what is so much needed is for people to become enhancers of the biosphere--which we could do, if we put our minds and hearts to it. To become enhancers of the biosphere, we must learn to add to, develop, work with, compliment the biological processes of the living Earth. Spreading toxic chemicals around the Earth, a process which in fact many current GMOs have hugely increased, is clearly not a way to enhance the biosphere. Disrupting the natural ecosystems of the Earth, beyond what is strictly required, is clearly not a way to enhance the biosphere. Increasing cancer and endochrine disruption among people is clearly not a way to enhance the biosphere.
