Chances are, your teens will be faced with, Should I or shouldnt I? This booklet will help you teach your child to know that the answer is, I shouldnt and I wont. If your teens dont hear about illegal drugs and alcohol from you, theyll hear about them from someone else. Make certain that they understand the risks of using marijuana and other drugs. Two-thirds of Hispanic teens in the U.S. see great risk of upsetting their parents or losing the respect of family and friends if they smoke marijuana. You might not expect your teens to experiment with marijuana and other drugs. But in the U.S., Hispanic eighth graders have the highest rates of use of most illegal drugs, including marijuana, cocaine and heroin. Teens, Marijuana and Other Drugs Teens today are using drugs at younger and younger ages, when their brains and bodies are still developing. Of all of the illicit drugs, marijuana is the most widely used. If your child is exposed to drugs, he or she will most likely be offered marijuana. Marijuana Causes Problems Some frequent, long-term marijuana users show signs of a lack of motivation (amotivational syndrome). Their problems include not caring about what happens in their lives and a lack of concern about how they look. As a result of these symptoms, some users tend to perform poorly in school or at work. Heavy or daily use of marijuana affects the parts of the brain that control memory, attention and learning and can make it more difficult to learn and perform tasks that call for more than one or two steps. 1 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 3 E l u s o d i a r i o o e n g r a n c a n t i d a d d e l a m a r i h u a n a a f e c t a l a s p a r t e s d e l c e r e b r o q u e c o n t r o l a n l a m e m o r i a , a p r e n d i z a j e y a t e n c i n , y p u e d e d i f i c u l t a r e l a p r e n d i z a j e y e j e c u c i n d e t a r e a s q u e r e q u i e r a n m s d e u n o o d o s p a s o s . Scientists are still learning about the many ways that marijuana can affect the brain. One joint can deliver four times as much cancer-causing tar as one tobacco cigarette. In a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a moderate dose of marijuana alone was shown to impair driving performance; the effects of a low dose of marijuana combined with alcohol were markedly greater than for either substance alone. While not everyone who uses marijuana becomes addicted, when a user begins to seek out and take the drug compulsively, that person is said to be dependent on the drug or addicted to it. In 2002, more than 280,000 people entering drug treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse, showing they needed help to stop using it. Some heavy users of marijuana show signs of withdrawal when they stop using the drug. They develop symptoms such as restlessness, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, weight loss and shaky hands. The marijuana that teens use today has more than twice the concentration of THC, the chemical that affects the brain, than the marijuana of 20 years ago. Young people who use marijuana weekly have double the risk of depression later in life, and teens who smoke marijuana weekly are three times more likely than non-users to have suicidal thoughts. Marijuana use in some teens has been linked to increased risk for schizophrenia in later years. 2 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 5 O t r a s S u s t a n c i a s T o m a r a l c o h o l s i e n d o a n m e n o r d e e d a d p u e d e c a u s a r m u c h o s p r o b l e m a s a l c u e r p o y c e r e b r o d e l o s j v e n e s . Alcohol use during the teen years can interfere with important developmental processes and can cause problems with thinking and learning. MDMA (ecstasy, XTC, X, Adam, hug, beans, love drug) is a drug that creates feelings of emotional warmth, mental stimulation, enhanced sensory perception and increased physical energy. MDMA can be dangerous to health, however, and, on rare occasions, lethal. People who abuse MDMA can experience increases in heart rate and blood pressure and other symptoms such as muscle tension, involuntary teeth-clenching, nausea, blurred vision, faintness and chills or sweating. In high doses, MDMA can interfere with the bodys ability to regulate temperature. This can lead to a sharp increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), resulting in liver, kidney and cardiovascular system failure. Methamphetamine (meth, speed, chalk, ice, crystal, glass) is a very toxic stimulant associated with serious health conditions, including potential heart and neurological damage, psychotic behavior, memory loss and aggression. It also contributes to increased transmission of infectious diseases, especially hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. Dangerous substances abused by children and teens may be found in the home. These toxic substances are collectively referred to as inhalants breathable chemical vapors that produce mind-altering effects. A variety of common products contain substances that can be inhaled. Many people do not know or understand that products such as spray paints, nail polish remover, hair spray, glues and cleaning fluids present any risk of abuse, because their intoxicating effects are so totally unconnected to their intended uses. Yet, young children and adolescents are among those most likely to abuse them, and do seek them out for this purpose. Chronic use can lead to brain or nerve damage, damage to the heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. Inhalants can cause death, even the very first time they are used. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs misused by teens today include pain killers and cold medicines with dextromethorphan (DXM). Misusing these medications can cause respiratory distress, cardiac stress, seizures, dependence and serious withdrawal symptoms. Misuse of DXM can cause nausea, vomiting, seizures, hallucinations and even death. 3 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 7 A l g u n a s m e d i c i n a s r e c e t a d a s y m e d i c a m e n t o s q u e s e c o m p r a n s i n r e c e t a q u e s o n a b u s a d o s p o r a d o l e s c e n t e s h o y e n d a i n c l u y e n l o s a n a l g s i c o s y m e d i c i n a p a r a r e s f r i a d o s q u e c o n t i e n e n d e x t r o m e t o r f a n ( D X M ) . People who inject anabolic steroids put themselves at risk for contracting dangerous infections, such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C and bacterial endocarditis. Anabolic steroids can also cause undesirable body changes. Men may develop enlarged breasts, and women's bodies may become masculinized. Both sexes can develop acne and hair loss. Tell Your Teen What You Expect Its important that your teen knows what you expect. Tell your teen that you do not want him or her using marijuana, other illicit drugs, or alcohol. As your teen enters middle school and then high school, your child will be at greater risk of using marijuana and alcohol if you have not made your expectations clear. Here are some clear ways you can tell your teens what you expect: Ive been thinking lately that Ive never actually told you this: I dont want you using marijuana, alcohol, tobacco or any drug. The rule in our house is that nobody uses drugs. Set Clear Rules Even though your teens are getting older and spending more time without you, its more important than ever to set rules and expectations. Give them a clear message: Say no to drugs, including marijuana the first drug they are likely to become involved with. Setting a firm rule of no drug use will help your child resist peer and other pressures to use drugs. 4 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 9 S i s u A d o l e s c e n t e D e s o b e d e c e l a s R e g l a s L o s p a d r e s n e c e s i t a n a p l i c a r l a s r e g l a s c o n s t a n t e y j u s t a m e n t e . If your teen uses drugs, despite knowing that you do not approve of drug use, establish punishment for breaking the rules. Here are some ideas: Restrict television and Internet use; suspend outside activities, such as going to the mall or to the movies; do not allow telephone calls or any contact with friends for a week. Beware of Messages That Encourage Drug Use Many parents are concerned about messages on television, in movies and music that encourage or trivialize drug use and that fail to show the harm of using drugs. You can set rules about what your teens watch on television, in the movies they see, or the songs they listen to. If you have a computer at home connected to the Internet, you should let your children know that you are in charge of their time online. Teens can not only find Web sites that promote drugs, but they can actually buy drugs over the Internet. Supporting and Teaching Your Child. Who Plants the Seeds Is Who Gets the Harvest. There are several opportunities in a day to create teachable moments, using everyday situations as an opportunity to talk to your teens about important topics, such as drugs. Some examples of teachable moments might be when youre discussing telenovelas or movies with your children, cooking together or eating dinner. For instance, if a character on a telenovela or movie is using drugs, you could begin a conversation with some of these phrases: I wonder what his family thinks about him taking drugs and getting high. Or, How do you think she will end up in life? Healthy Activities: Healthy Mind, Healthy Body To help keep your teens drug-free, encourage them to participate in healthy activities, such as sports, drama clubs or music groups, or to participate in faith or volunteer activities. They could also spend time with their families doing outside activities, going to the movies, or helping their grandparents with errands, such as grocery shopping. 5 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 11 T c n i c a s P a t e r n a l e s p a r a M a n t e n e r a s u s H i j o s S e g u r o s y S a l u d a b l e s N o e s f c i l s e r p a d r e , e s p e c i a l m e n t e c u a n d o s e t r a t a d e h a b l a r d e t e m a s d e l i c a d o s t a l c o m o e l d e l a s d r o g a s . Experts say that to create an environment that combines words with action you should: Get involved in your teens lives. Know what your children are doing their activities and how they spend their time. Always know where your child is when he or she is away from home. Ask your teen to check in with you regularly. Know who your teens friends are. Get to know the parents of your teen's friends. Set limits with clear rules and consequences for breaking them. Praise and reward good behavior. If They Are Using Drugs. To Fight Big Problems, You Need Big Remedies. Its not always easy to tell when teens are using drugs, because many signs or symptoms are common for youth this age. While there is no single warning sign for drug or alcohol use, some signs to look for include: Skipping classes or not doing well in school Unusual odors on their clothes or in their room Hostility or lack of cooperation Physical changes (red eyes, runny nose) Borrowing money often, or suddenly having extra cash Lack of interest in activities Significant mood changes Loss of interest in personal appearance Change in friends Heightened secrecy about actions or possessions 6 325475_ONDCPBiLingual_PRINT.qxd 9/27/05 4:34 PM Page 13 P A D R E S . You dont need to wait for more evidence. You must judge when your child needs help. There are basically two instances: If your child uses drugs just once or twice and you believe he or she will not use drugs again, explain to your teen what he or she did that worried you. Set a punishment such as no contact with friends for a week or so. Make it clear that if there is a next time, the punishment will be even tougher. If your child is repeatedly using drugs and/or you see that he or she is addicted (or if you are not sure if your child is addicted), there is help available for you and your child. In most communities, you can get help from a counselor at your childs school, your pediatrician, nurse or other health care provider or your faith community.
