Liquified Gas Cargoes

The following are petroleum and Chemical products which are gases at normal temperatures and
pressures but carried as a liquid by means of Refrigeration, pressurisation or a combination of both.
Saturated Hydrocarbons(Alkanes)- stable and unreactive, tend to come in unpure state
with some degree of contamination
Methane CH4 -!.!"C

&thane C'H! -((.!"C
)ropane C*H( -4'"C

+utane C4H, -,.-"C
Unsaturated Hydrocarbons-reactive and unstable !olymerise (solidify) when come into
contact with air
&thylene C'H' -,*.."C
)ropylene C*H! -4..."C
+utylene C4H( -!./"C
+utadiene C4H! -4.-"C
Highly reacti0e, a
chemical inhibitor must
be added to allow it to be
transferred
"hemical "argoes- very reactive, made very pure
1mmonia $H* -**.4"C
C2nsidered to be
inflammable although it
will burn
34nyl Chloride Monomer 3CM5 C'H*Cl -*.("C This is the basis of )3C
&thylene 26ide C'H42 7,.."C &6tremely 8lammable
Alkanes
These are saturated hydrocarbons with the formula CnH'n7'. 1ll abo0e are gasses at normal temperatures
and pressures, )entane, He6ane etc are liquid under normal conditions. +utane and abo0e may occur as
isomers
9loo: for the longest chain then count the number of Methane ;methyl< li:e pairs
Odorisers
&thyl-Mercapton C'H-=H is one of the additi0es added to normally odourless methane and others before it
is distributed to ma:e detection easier
Alkenes
These are unsaturated hydrocarbons with the formula CnH'n. There is no equi0al0ent to methane.
Inhibitors
al:enes can react when you don"t want them to . They polymerise to form one single long molecule.
4nhibitors are put in to pre0ent the double bond acting
