What is BAS?
A Benchmark Assessment System (BAS) is a
series of texts that can be used to identify a
student's current reading level and progress along
a gradient of text levels over time. It is designed to
be used in grades K-8. In individual assessment
conferences, as the student reads the text aloud
and/or silently, the teacher analyzes and assess
the students reading ability through a running
record and their comprehension through a
conversation. The teacher assess the student on
multiple leveled text to determine their highest
independent and instructional level. The BAS
scores provides the teacher with information about
the students reading progress and uses the
assessment to help in their instruction.
What is Guided Reading Level, and Lexile Level?
The Guided Reading Level is the placement level based on the BAS, which would
probably be one of the several instructional level(s) the child scored in; however, the
teacher would need to determine their placement based on data. A Lexile Level score
are based on two strong predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: word
frequency and sentence length. A Lexile reader score can range from below 200L for
beginning readers to above 1700L for advanced readers. Readers who score at or
below 0L receive a BR for Beginning Reader.
