Agenda 21

The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the Statement of Principles for the
Sustainable Management of Forests were signed more than 178 countries in the United
Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), which held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, between 3 and 14 June 1992.
Approximately 400 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) were present,
while more than 17 000 people attended the parallel NGO Forum celebrating the Summit, a
total of almost 108 heads of state and government took part in the sessions of the Conference
, which was attended also about 30 thousand local and foreign activists, and more than eight
thousand journalists.
The Conference was an opportunity to adopt an action program for the XXI century, called
Agenda 21 lists some of the 2500 recommendations concerning the application of the
principles of the declaration.
It takes into account issues relating to health, housing, air pollution, management of the seas,
mountains and forests, desertification, water resource management and sanitation,
agriculture management, management residues.
The program is a detailed actions that must be undertaken at the global, national and local
level, UN entities, governments of its member states and individual major groups in every area
in which human impacts occur on the average plan atmosphere.
Agenda 21, comprises 40 chapters divided into 4 sections:
I Social and economic dimensions,
II Conservation and management of resources for development,
III Strengthening the role of major groups,
IV Medium of performance.

Conclusions
Agenda 21 was signed in Rio de Janeiro, is of great importance for nature because measures
were established to achieve a balance between economic, social and environmental needs, in
order to solve the problems that occur in the environment this way we avoid the alteration of
its components.
