INTEGRATED UNIT: Patriotic Symbols and Traditions

First Grade

Objectives:
TSW observe and identify US Patriotic Symbols
TSW demonstrate comprehension of how patriotic customs reflect American individualism and freedom
TSW create two-dimensional flag in rectangular shape
TSW identify rectangle attributes using geometric language
TSW demonstrate their understanding of vocabulary
TSW demonstrate their ability to follow multi step instructions when they create their Pledge of Allegiance handbooks.
TSW demonstrate their understanding of the Pledge of Allegiance
TSW demonstrate acceptable classroom etiquette during performance
TSW explain the origin of the Grand Old Flag and the significance of the song
TSW actively participate most of the time
TSW follow the teachers lead

Lesson Plan:

Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation):
Who knows what a symbol is?
What are some symbols that represent our country?


Process:

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Play the Symbols PowerPoint and have discussion throughout
Have students participate in Patriotic Symbol chart activity
Discuss throughout how symbols relate to patriotism

MATH:
Discuss square, rectangle and star geometrical attributes
Create flag with shapes

LANGUAGE ARTS
Teacher reads The Pledge of Allegiance
Discuss the significance of the pledge of allegiance
Students discover the significance of the pledge of allegiance by understanding what it means
Vocabulary: pledge, allegiance, republic, indivisible, liberty

MUSIC:
Students repeat after teacher singing Youre A Grand Old Flag
Add movement to each verse
Practice and perform entire song



Accommodations:
1. (for a child with special needs)
Use visual aids for the hearing impaired
Assign a buddy to assist student with special needs
Utilize an exercise ball to increase movement for student Permit student to write out the lyrics in a different color
Permit additional time to sing

2. (for an ELL)

Create a vocabulary board with pictures of key words used in the unit
Discussion to affirm and enhance understanding
Pair ELLs with student translators



Assessment/Evaluation:
Observation and participation during discussions and singing
Observation during manipulative activities patriotic symbols, flag, and pledge booklet
Create the American Flag with proper placement of stars and stripes
Student will create the Pledge of Allegiance book with proper placement of words and images
Students are following directions and listening effectively
Students able to explain what the Grand Old Flag means

symbols and traditional practices that honor and
foster patriotism in the United States by
identifying the American flag and demonstrating
respect for the American flag by learning about
the Pledge of Allegiance.
