Background Information

Students have already read the novel Tomorrow, When the War Began.
They have already been analyzing the text.
They have already started working on the themes in the chapters.

Teaching/Learning Purposes(s) (written in terms of outcomes):

Identify themes in the novel Tomorrow, When the War Began.
Be able to give an example of the theme.

Preparation:

Have read the novel previously so had an understanding of the book.
Have read through the booklet provided for the students by the teacher. The
booklet has summaries of all the chapters.
Booklet also has a summary of 3 of the main themes in the novel.
Write down some questions.

Learning Experiences:
1. How will I engage the learners?

Speak clearly and confidently.
Look at the student when talking to them.

2. Student tasks and activities (what will the students do to achieve the lesson
purpose(s)?

They need to be able to identify the themes in the novel.
They must have a piece of text from the novel to back up the theme they
have identified.

3. Conclusion (how do you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
purpose(s)?

The students were already working on the activity in a previous lesson and I was to
help them finish. They read through the chapters they were working on and
individually they would point out what they believed was a theme to the other
students and if agreed they would write it down along with the example of text.
I asked them about the themes they discovered and why they thought this was a
theme. I also asked them to give me the examples of the themes in the text. They
were also able to find additional themes to the ones that were mentioned in the
booklet they were given by their teacher.

Assessment and evaluation: (How do you know the students have achieved the
learning purpose(s). Evaluate your own performance)

The students were able to find not only the three themes mentioned in the booklet
but they could also find additional themes. They were also able to find examples to
match the themes. They were a very easy group of boys to work with. They spoke
to me and included me in their work. They answered all the questions I asked them
and were happy to talk to me about their work. They understood the task in front of
them and that made it quite easy.
