How do natural disasters affect us?

Natural disasters affect our world in many ways. These disasters cause people pain and
suffering. 500 disasters happen each year. A natural disaster is any event or force of a
nature that has disastrous consequences. It affects people the way they react to lost ones.
Three types of disasters are floods, earthquakes and hurricanes.
Floods
Floods occur in all parts of the world. A flood occurs when a large amount of rain covers the
land that is usually very dry. Heavy rain and storms can cause very bad damage, flooding,
mudslides and also landslides. Some big and huge
waves that crash over the shore and it cover the land
with water.
In 1993, heavy rain caused flooding along the
Mississippi and Missouri Rivers in the U.S.A, some of
the towns were damaged. In the city of St. Louis
(where the rivers meet) in some of the places
remained under water for 200 days. The flooding
caused $20 billion worth of damage and it is called
the great flood.
Many floods take several day or weeks to build up but, flash floods can form in just a few
hours. Some flash floods occur in desserts, (the last place you might expect a flood)
Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur in all parts of the world.
Earthquakes are a shaking of Earths surface.
They occur when layers of underground rock
change position. Scientists think that more than
8,000 small earthquakes happen every day, but
we dont notice. There are three different types of
earthquakes they are called tectonic, volcanic and explosion. The study of earthquakes is
called seismology. Scientists measure and record earthquakes by using devices called
seismometers.
In July 1, 1201 historys deadliest earthquake occurred. It was a powerful earthquake that
struck around the Mediterranean Sea. More than 1 million people died, most of the deaths
were in the area. No other earthquake has ever been recorded that has killed so many
people.
Whenever an earthquake or tsunami takes thousands of innocent lives, a shocked world
talks of little else anonymous
Hurricanes
Hurricanes are a large and very powerful
storm. They have whirling winds that blow 120
kilometres per hour. They gather heat and
energy through contact with warm ocean
water. They usually form in tropical parts of the
world. They rotate in a counter clockwise
direction and they also lose their strength when
they are over land. Hurricanes are most common between the months June and November.
The difference between a hurricane, cyclone and typhoon is where it occurs. The hurricane
occurs in the Atlantic and Northern Pacific. The typhoon occurs in the west Pacific and the
cyclone happens in the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
On August 13, 2005 a hurricane hit the United States. It was called Hurricane Katrina. It
affected the Bahamas, South Florida, Cuba, Louisiana and many more areas. It damaged
$113.4 billion of the citys property. It sadly killed 1,833 victims during the hurricane.
Anyone who says theyre not afraid at the time of a hurricane is either a fool or a liar, or a
little bit of both Anderson Cooper
When hurricanes come onto land, their heavy rain, strong winds and large waves can
damage buildings, trees and cars. Hurricanes have led up to the death of around 2 million
people around the last 200 years.
