AFTER SCHOOL HELP: Tuesdays and Thursdays by Request
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Designed primarily for students who have taken one or more years of Read 180, these non-sequental courses feature a
comprehensive English Language Arts curriculum that prepares students for the literacy demands of the 21st Century through a
powerful combinaton of explicit instructon, inquiry-based learning, contemporary and relevant literature and informatonal texts,
real-world writng and projects, and supportve technology. The mission of this course is to prepare students who are struggling
readers to be career and college ready.

3. Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline
4. Comprehend as well as critque
5. Value evidence and determine techniques to fnd quality evidence
6. Use technology and digital media strategically and capably
7. Come to understand other perspectves and cultures
8. Build beter reading comprehension skills
9. Improve Lexile scores moving towards grade level profciency (to be examined via SRI exam)

PLAGIARISM/CHEATING
Plagiarism and Cheating will result in zero (0) credit for a given assignment and disciplinary action at the discre-
tion of the Director of Academics (Heidi Driscoll).




Apart from instructional devices, NO electronic devices are to be used in the classroom unless determined other-
wise by Mr. Cross or Ms. Couto. Charging of cell phones in the classroom are ONLY allowed in designated
charging areas (aka. Cell Phone Prison).

Listening to music in class is a privilege and can be revoked if behavior warrants it. Students are asked to refrain
from wearing earphones/earbuds during the class lectures.

If parents need to contact students during the school day, they are to contact the front office and should refrain
from calling students on their cellular devices during the school day.

Students may only use the computers in the classroom when directed to by Mr. Cross/Ms. Couto or upon receiv-
ing permission from Mr. Cross/Ms. Couto.


Determining a dress code which makes allowances for the rapid changes in fashion is a difficult task. Every pos-
sibility cannot be included. Students whose dress is questionable, as well as those not following the dress code,
will be referred to the Guidance Directors office. Parents may be called to bring in a change of clothes in ex-
treme cases. Students whose attire is blatantly or repeatedly violent or offensive will be referred to Guidance.

The following dress guidelines will be adhered to:
Clothing with obscene or unacceptable messages is not allowed.
Footwear which will mark or damage floors is not to be worn.
Items which could be considered a safety concern are not permitted.
Clothing and accessories that are considered disruptive to the educational process are not allowed.
Hats are not allowed.




Students must receive permission/passes in advance before going to see Guidance or Behavioral management
counselors. Students who did not have pre-approved reasons will need to submit for permission during their
own time (before school or after school). Students are NOT ALLOWED to go to their shops during class
time. Please refrain from using your shop teachers to this advantage.

Tardiness If you are tardy to class, please enter the room QUIETLY, sign the tardy log, put your late pass on
my desk and begin work. I will catch you up on anything missed when the time is appropriate.

Absences If you know you will be absent from class, please see me in advance to get your make-up work. If
you are absent unexpectedly, see me as soon as possible between classes, before, or after school. Please do not
interrupt my teaching to get make-up work.

I understand that I am allowed to have a bad day once in awhile, but if there is a pattern of bad behavior,
myparents or guardian will be notified.

I understand that copying from other students, the Internet or any other source is considered

PLAGARISM and will result in a 0 for the assignment and behavior consequences according to the hand-
book. I will not have a chance to make it up and may fail as a result.

If I am having problems of any kind in class, I promise to try to resolve them politely and honestly.
