Attendance: Please view school

as a priority and see to it that

your child attends every day
except in cases of illness,
emergency, appointments, or family trips.
Accelerated Reading: I will set the goals
for the frst 9 weeks. The students and
parents will set the goal each of the
following 9 weeks.
Book Orders: Book orders are
a great resource for
purchasing books
inexpensively. The PTA
handles this.
Birthdays: If you wish to send in a treat to
celebrate your childs birthday, please
contact me to make arrangements.
Invitations may be passed out in class
ONLY if there is one for EVERY child.
Communication: Please feel free
to email me at any time;
julie.faulk@eu.dodea.edu
Conferences will be scheduled
with all parents in November and at the
end of every grading period.
Curriculum: Each teachers materials
may vary but please be assured that all
instruction and materials are focused on
meeting DoDEAs standards. The
standards are on the DoDEA site, which is
listed on the back of this pamphlet.
Dismissal: School ends at 2:30.
It is DoDDs policy that second
graders are permitted to walk
home on their own. In your
childs Take Home Folder you
will have the opportunity to sign of on
how your child will be getting home daily.
Once this has been established then you
must send in a note in the Take Home
folder stating that the method for getting
home on that day is diferent, if no note is
received then the child will return home by
the usual method. If you are going to be
late picking up your child, then the child
will be waiting in the front ofce for you.
You must send a note if your child is to
go home a diferent way than normal
(including being released to an adult other
than yourself.)
Emergencies: Please make sure we have
the correct emergency numbers and
information on fle for your child.
Email: Please give us all the email
addresses where you would like to receive
information. Also, I would greatly
appreciate it if you would go home tonight
and email me (as a test) at
julie.faulk@eu.dodea.edu to insure that I
have the correct email on fle.
Field Trips: Our class will
participate in feld trips. I will
need chaperones for these
events. Permission slips must
be returned for your child to attend.
Always send money (correct amount) and
permission form in an envelope or baggie
with your childs name written on it.
Guided Reading: Each
students individual reading
strengths and weaknesses will be
assessed. They will be grouped
accordingly. The BAS will be given during
the 1
st
and 4
th
9 weeks as well as the STAR
Reading (assessment) at the end of each
quarter. Further info. Re: our online
Reading Streets component will be sent
home next week.
Guidance:
Our Guidance counselor visits the class
every other week to teach character traits
and other social subjects. You may fnd a
Home Activity related to these lessons in
the Leave at Home side of your childs
folder. These do not need to be returned
to school.

Homework: Second graders
will need someone to establish
a daily time and place for them
to complete their homework.
They will also need you to follow up every
day after they tell you that their homework
is completed. It is important to follow up
and establish accountability by helping
them to correct mistakes as soon as
possible so that the mistake does not
become "cemented" in their brains. Also, if
they know that you are following up by
checking their homework for accuracy and
neatness, they will be less likely to rush
through their work. Your child will have
homework Monday-Thursday and on the
rare occasion over the weekend,
dependent upon holidays etc. Always
check your childs Take Home folder
(everyday, even Fridays!) for homework
and other important correspondence.
Reading each evening for 20 minutes is a
nightly requirement as well as ten minutes
of MobyMax.com. Please note, homework
does not begin until the second week of
school. So, in conclusion, remember there
will be spelling homework (M-TH) (see
spelling section on this newsletter) and 20
minutes of reading every night in addition
MobyMax.com and various other skills
practice as needed.
Healthy Snacks: Always pack a small
healthy morning snack to eat. Our Health
curriculum stresses the importance of
healthy eating and I explain to the
students that whole foods are always
healthy eating. If it does not have a
wrapper and has not been to a factory and
changed then it is a whole food, thus a
healthy snack.
Journals: Your child will write
in journals throughout the
school year.
Keep: Students must be
responsible for
keeping up with their things,
this includes their
educational supplies along with lunch
supplies and coats, jackets etc.
Lunch: Lunch/Recess is from
12:25-1:10.
Library: We will visit the library
weekly to check out at least two
books. Your child is required to read for
20 mins. every night. They may read a
book of their choice that is their own OR
take home a library book which MUST be
returned the following day. Families may
have accounts.
Management: I use a Token
Economy in the classroom. The
students are rewarded if they
get caught being good with
play money. At the end of each quarter
they are allowed to spend their money on
items that are auctioned of.
News: School news will be sent
home with the oldest or only
child in each family. I also
send home a weekly newsletter
that includes the spelling list. I also
depend on email to share information
about the classroom.
Open Door: Please call or email
if you ever have any questions
or concerns. If you would like
to help in our class, just contact
me as to the best time for you.
Practice: The skills learned in
class need to be practiced
often, so please ask your child to read for
you or quiz him/her on the
math facts and spelling words.
Projects: Information sheets
will be sent home detailing the
guidelines.
PTA: Join today and get involved in your
childs school!
Quiet Work Space: Make sure
your child has a quiet place to
do their homework.
Reading: We use a combination
of Reading Streets and trade books in
addition to Reading A-Z:
http://www.readinga-z.com/
Recess: Daily at 10:30 and after lunch.
Dress appropriately. Snack is permitted
before recess from 10:15-10:30.
Report Cards: The grades on the report
card are CD (Consistently Displayed) P
(Progressing) and N (Needs Improvement).
Rules: The students spent the morning
discussing and developing rules for the
classroom. They are as follows: Follow the
teachers directions, be nice to others,
keep your hands and feet to yourself, raise
your hand to speak, stay in your seat and
keep the classroom neat.
Specials: Our specials are 8:50-
9:30 daily. The rotation is as
follows: Day 1-ART, Day 2-Host
Nation (Maynard), Day 3-PE, Day
4-Music, Day 5-Math Lab. The frst day of
school starts with Day 1. These Days do
not necessarily correspond with the days of
the week. Also, Please make sure that your
child wears the appropriate shoes for PE
day. We will also have computer lab and
library. FLES (Spanish) is also taught 3
times per week (30 minutes each
lesson.)

on our classroom website. I
encourage you to print one of.
Monday evenings homework will be to write
the words fve times each, Tuesdays
homework will be to put the words in ABC
order, Wednesdays homework will be to
write a sentence using each spelling word
and Thursdays homework will be to
prepare for the Friday quiz by studying
their words with a parent. All spelling
homework is due the following day.
Tardies: Students will be marked tardy
after 8:05. Students arriving after this time
must get a tardy slip from the
ofce.
Unkind Behavior: No unkind
behavior will be tolerated.
Volunteers: We love volunteers!
Return the completed volunteer
sheet as soon as possible.
Water: Your child may bring a
water bottle to keep at his/her
desk as long as it has a pop-up
top.
I am eXcited to work with you and your
child this year! Make sure he/she gets
plenty of zzzzzs each night as we have
busy, fun-flled days planned for this year.
