1.

Research Question
Recognize the problem/question being looked at.
What do you want to solve or figure out?
What do you already know?
What do you need to find out?
Gather and collect any information.

2. Establish your variables
What is your dependent variable?
o The variable you are investigating
What is your independent variable?
o The one variable you will change
What are your controlled variables?
o The factors you keep the same so the you have a fair test

3. Form a Hypothesis
An educated guess or prediction of what you think might
happen and why based on what you already know or
have already observed.
Must be testable and related directly to your question.
Use the format:
If... then... because..

4. Materials
Compile a complete list of all the materials you will need to
conduct the experiment.

5. Method
Clear and concise.
Step-by-step to show the procedure in a logical manner.
Designed to test the hypothesis and answer the question.
Know what the variable is (what is being changed).
Scientific Method
6. Risk Assessment
What are the safety hazards?
o What is the source of potential harm/accident?
What precautions will you take?
What measures can you take to prevent any
accident/harm
What will be your accident response?
o What should be done if accident/harm occurs?

7. Results
(Data & Observations)
Any and all information collected during the experiment.
Sometimes in the form of a table, chart, graph,
illustration...
Ensure all tables and graphs are labeled correctly
Written description of what was noticed during the
experiment, often with accompanying
diagram/picture/illustration of some kind.

8. Conclusion
Analyze the observations you made and the data you
collected.
Describe anything that happened during the experiment
(problems, interesting observations, etcetera).

9. Evaluation
Was this a fair test?
Were there enough trials?
Did multiple trials give similar results
Any possible human-errors or inaccuracies?
Could you improve the experiment?

Was your hypothesis correct?
