Assessment Guidelines
Formative assessment is assessment for learning. It is ongoing, descriptive feedback provided to students to help them learn. It is also used by teachers to adjust instruction as needed. Formative assessment is not used to determine the students grade in the course.
Summative assessment is assessment of learning. It is used to evaluate how well students have learned the outcomes of the course. There are a variety of ways that students may demonstrate their learning. Summative assessments are used to determine the students grade. The summative assessments used in this course are described below:
Form of Summative Assessment Time of Assessment Unit tests: will be given at the end of some units of study. Quizzes: Student learning will be assessed on an on- going basis during a unit of study via quizzes. Unit projects: Much of the student learning in this course will be achieved through Project-Based Learning. The projects will be a guided study of a student-selected topic which is related to the main topic of the unit. The projects will both be a means of learning course content and skills, as well as an assessment tool. One three days after the completion of study in the unit. On-going during each unit of study
On-going during each unit of study. Final projects will be due at the end of the unit at a showcase of the students projects. Final exam: The final exam will be an opportunity for students to demonstrate improved understanding of selected outcomes from throughout the semester. Exam period at the end of semester.
Outcome-Based Assessment At the beginning of each unit, students will be provided a list of outcomes of which they will be expected to demonstrate their learning by the end of that unit, or semester. This list will include both Social Studies content knowledge outcomes, and English Language Arts and Social Studies skills outcomes. The students will be required to track their own progress, and take responsibility for their achievement of the course outcomes.
Home and School Communication The success of every student is largely dependent upon their engagement in the subject, the responsibility they take for their own learning, as well as the support which they receive from their parents or guardians. When all three of these factors come together, the learning can be limitless! As such, we will do our best to provide learning opportunities that are engaging to the students, and help the students increase their own level of responsibility for their learning. Our request to you, as a parent or guardian, is that you provide the added support and encouragement that your child requires in order to reach their full potential. Please do your best to help us establish and maintain open communication on your childs progress in the course. Below is our contact information, and we would really appreciate if you could provide us with your e-mail address, and/or home, work, or cell number for ease of communication.
