Physical Education Term 3 Learning Story

On Tuesday August 26th, Mr John Dorge, a former Australian Olympic basketball player spoke to the Grade Six year level about his
illustrious career in basketball as a player, coach and mentor. In his talk, Mr Dorge touched on the three key themes of grasping
opportunities, setting effective goals and working as a part of a team.

Below are a series of reflective questions.

1. MAKING THE MOST OF AN OPPORTUNITY:

a) Reflect on a time, moment or event in which you took a risk and grabbed an opportunity.
A: At interschool sports (soccer) the ball was at my feet in front of goal so I went for the shot, took the opportunity and I got the goal.

b) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education, is there something / an opportunity you are
looking forward to trying?
A: Participating and learning new things like algebra, trying out for sports teams (preferably tennis or soccer) and other things that I
havent done in primary school.

2. SETTING EFFECTIVE GOALS:

c) Have you ever taken the time to set yourself a goal or a series of goals? If so, did you achieve it / them?
A: In interschool sport (soccer) I aimed to score a goal and I did in the last game but most importantly do my best because I was in the
defence for most part of the season. And in learning my goal was to learn as much as I could and I achieved that especially in maths.

d) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education, is there a goal or a series of goals you wish
to set yourself. If so, what measures will you take to achieve it / them?
A: My goal is to get good results in tests such as NAPLAN and try out for as much as I can. To achieve this I will have to be persistent
and practice a lot as well.

3. WORKING AS PART OF A TEAM:

e) Reflect on a time, where you worked as a part of a team. Was the team successful, and if so, how did you positively
contribute to the achieved success?
A: In interschool sport (cricket) our team was very successful because we won every game except for the grand final and I think I
contributed well to the first set of games get a double six and two fours which I was very excited about.

f) In your soon coming transition from Primary Education to Secondary Education, is there an opportunity you are looking
forward to trying in which you will have to work effectively as a part of a team?
A: As I said in another question I am looking forward to trying out for teams such as tennis or soccer and I am also looking forward to
pastoral where I can meet new people and make new friends.
