Ethical Issues in Aviation
Edited by Elizabeth A. Hoppe, Lewis University, USA
Ethical Issues in Aviation is an innovative and thought-
provoking book that explores an important, but heretofore,
neglected area of research. While the study of ethics has
been applied in numerous other industries, its application
to aviation is long overdue. For those who study aviation,
this book is sure to provide multiple new perspectives on
familiar issues. It was a treat to read about the business
of aviation, safety, diversity, airport development, and
environmental issues through an ethical lens.
Andrew R. Goetz, University of Denver, USA
Opens up a new area of applied ethics, comprehensively
addressing the ethical issues confronting the civil aviation
industry.
Combines a theoretical framework with ethical concerns
from the workplace.
Applied ethics has been gaining wide attention in a variety
of curricula, and there is growing awareness of the need for
ethical training in general. Well-publicized ethical problems
such as the Challenger disaster, the Ford Pinto case and the
collapse of corporations such as Enron have highlighted the
need to rethink the role of ethics in the workplace.
The concept of applied ethics originated in medicine with
a groundbreaking book published in 1979. Business ethics
books began to appear in the 1980s, with engineering
ethics following in the 1990s. This volume now opens up a
new area of applied ethics, comprehensively addressing the
ethical issues confronting the civil aviation industry.
Aviation is unique in two major ways: rstly it has a long
history of government regulations, and secondly its primary
focus is safety. In earlier years commercial aviation was
viewed in the same manner as public utilities and so
was highly regulated by government. But moves in more
recent decades towards deregulation mean aviation is now
treated like any other business. Meanwhile some experts
believe that the sudden switch to deregulation has caused
problems, especially as many airlines were unprepared for
the change. Ethical Issues in Aviation focuses on current
concerns and trends, to reect the changes that have
occurred in this deregulated era.
The book provides the reader with an overview of the major
themes in civil aviation ethics. It begins with theoretical
frameworks, followed by sections on the business side of
aviation, employee responsibility, diversity in aviation,
ground issues regarding airports, air trafc control and
security, as well as health and the environment. The
contributors to the volume include both academics
doing research in the eld as well as professionals who
provide accounts of the ethical situations that arise in the
workplace.

Air Transport in the 21st Century
Key Strategic Developments
Edited by John F. OConnell and George Williams,
both at Craneld University, UK
The air transport industry is one of the fastest growing,
economically important, yet least protable industries in
the world. Air Transport in the 21st Century: Key Strategic
Developments takes the reader on a fascinating journey
through some of the key strategic challenges facing the
industry today.
Giovanni Bisignani, Director General & CEO, IATA
International Air Transport Association,
Comprehensive coverage of the key issues affecting and
shaping the aviation industry.
Offers perspectives from senior industry fgures and
academics.
Air Transport in the 21st Century reviews current trends
in the airline industry and its related suppliers, thereby
providing an insight into the forces that are changing its
dynamics. It examines the factors that are reshaping the
structure of the industry with a view to identifying the key
issues whose impact will be critical in the future.
The book features two very distinct sections. The rst
contains short contributions from senior industry executives
from airlines, aircraft/engine manufacturers, safety and
navigational provider organisations, who have set out
their take of where the airline industry is heading. This
commercial input sets the scene for the book and provides
the bridge to the second section, which is composed of 18
chapters written by distinguished academic authors. Each
chapter presents a valuable insight into a specic area
of the air transport industry, including: airlines, airports,
cargo, deregulation, the environment, navigation, strategy,
information technology, security and tourism. The shared
objective of the authors is to describe and explain the core
competencies that are determining the current shape of
the industry and to examine the forces that will change its
direction going forward.
Written in a management style, this book appeals to
all levels of personnel who work for airlines across the
world. It is also written for airport authorities, aerospace
manufacturers, regulatory and government transportation
agencies, researchers and students of aviation management,
transport studies, tourism and the wider air transport
industry.

Moving Boxes by Air
The Economics of International Air Cargo
Peter S. Morrell, Craneld University, UK
'Air cargo deserves far greater recognition of its role in
the protability of airlines, and in the global distribution
of goods and the spread of the benets of globalization.
A book such as Moving Boxes by Air is therefore a highly
welcome addition to the published material covering
this aspect of the industry, and provides a fresh analysis
and insights. It includes a good overview of the market
(customers, commodities and suppliers), of the state of the
industry, and of the key issues faced. It is especially relevant
to see a balanced chapter on air cargo and the environment,
as this topic is still relatively unexplored.'
Oliver Evans, Chief Cargo Ofcer,
Swiss International Air Lines Ltd
The rst book dedicated entirely to air cargo.
up-to-date and covering all key aspects of
the air cargo sector.
Air cargo is a key element of the global supply chain. It
allows outsourcing of manufacturing to other countries
and links production in both multinational and smaller
enterprises. It has also been the most important driver of
certain export industries in countries such as South Africa,
Kenya and Chile.
As a component of the air transport industry, air cargo
makes the crucial difference between prot and loss on
many long-haul routes. For some network combination
carriers it accounts for up to half of total tonne-kms own,
and as much as one quarter of total revenue. In addition,
the integrated carriers such as DHL, FedEx and TNT have
their own eets of dedicated freighter aircraft, and cargo
aircraft operators like Cargolux and Nippon Cargo have
a specialist role in the industry.
Featuring expert analysis and worked examples to enhance
understanding, Moving Boxes by Air by Peter Morrell offers
a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to the business and
practices of air cargo, with a chapter dedicated to each
key issue, such as: current trends, market characteristics,
regulation, airport terminal operations, pricing and
revenues, and environmental impacts.

The Passenger Has Gone Digital
and Mobile
Accessing and Connecting Through
Information and Technology
Nawal K. Taneja,
Department of Aviation, Ohio State University, USA
Presents the game-changing opportunities
presented to the airline industry by
new-generation technology.
Offers the chance to break free of the
established parameters, to improve
the customer experience and the bottom
line without the need to compromise.
Technology is changing expectations in the airline industry.
Passengers want to be in control, and they expect airlines
to become solution providers and aggregators of value, to
provide them with personalized services. Airline employees
expect to be given the tools to do their jobs and to meet
passenger expectations. Airline executives expect to make
returns that are reasonable and relatively stable through
business cycles. All of these expectations can be met by
airlines through the effective and efcient leveraging of
information and technology, to shift from being operations-
and product-centric to becoming customer-centric and
dramatically improving the overall passenger travel
experience throughout the travel cycle.
In this new book Nawal K. Taneja, explores and explains the
game-changing opportunities presented to the industry by
new-generation information and technology. He shows how
information and technology can now drive, not just enable,
an airline's strategy to become truly customer-centric at
a personalized level, while at the same time enabling
the operator to reduce costs, enhance revenues, reduce
risks and become much more exible and agile by better
managing complexity.

An innovative way to apply risk
management to corporate sustainability
in aviation.
Identifes ways for turning risks into potential
corporate advantages.
'This well-written and accurate book offers a real global and
accessible view of sustainable development of the aviation
industry through the tools that risk management provides.
The authors demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of risk
management theory as well as its practical application to
the aviation industry, given the primacy of sustainability
for aviations future.'
Emmanuel A. Gyzis, Airlines Legal Counsel and Executive
Senior Partner, Emm. A. Gyzis & Partners Law ofces
Sustainability factors should be considered by
managers like any other business risk issue as they have a
substantial impact on corporate management. Air transport
corporations need a strong sustainability management
framework to manage economic, environmental and social
risks and so achieve their corporate sustainability objective
and meet their stakeholders' demands. This book offers a
new Enterprise Sustainability Risk Management (ESRM)
model to fulll these requirements.
The model incorporates the triple bottom line (TBL) agenda
into the companies' sustainability management. ESRM deals
with the environmental, social, and ecological risks as well
as the strategic, economic, operational, and threat risks of
companies. The best corporate sustainability strategies and
management approaches require the consideration of all
corporate risks in both a holistic and systematic way.
Flouris and Kucuk Yilmaz present an effective way to
manage sustainability risks via a new, well-designed,
integrated, dynamic and exible framework. It introduces
an opportunity for turning risks into potential corporate
advantages.

Understanding Decision-making
Processes in Airline Operations
Control
Peter J. Bruce,
Swinburne University of Technology, Australia
Improve decision-making processes and
so minimize the impacts of disruptions.
Consider decision-making processes from
a human perspective.
Previous studies conducted within the aviation industry
have examined a multitude of crucial aspects such as
policy, airline service quality, and revenue management.
An extensive body of literature has also recognised the
importance of decision-making in aviation, with the focus
predominantly on pilots and air trafc controllers.
Understanding Decision-Making Processes in Airline
Operations Control focuses instead on an area largely
overlooked: an airline's Operations Control Centre
(OCC). This is the nerve centre of the airline, responsible
for decision-making for operational control of an airline's
daily schedules. The OCCs environment is extremely
intense. A key role of controllers is to make decisions
that facilitate the airline's recovery from frequent,
highly complex, and often multiple disruptions. As such,
decision-making in this domain is critical to minimise the
operational, commercial and nancial impact resulting
from disruptions.
The book examines many aspects of individual
decision-making in airline operations, and addresses
the deciencies found by presenting an examination
of the relationships among situation awareness,
information completeness, experience, expertise,
decision considerations and decision alternatives
in OCCs.
The text utilises a multiple case study approach and
proposes a number of relevant and important implications
for OCC management. Practical outcomes highlight the
need for enhancing training programs enabling existing
controllers to readily identify and classify elements of
situation awareness and decision considerations as a
means of improving the decision-making process. They
also draw attention to the need for airline OCCs to
understand the extent to which industry experience
and expertise of controllers is important in the selection
of future staff.

Simulation in Aviation Training
Edited by Florian Jentsch, Michael Curtis and
Eduardo Salas, University of Central Florida, USA
CRITICAL ESSAYS ON HUMAN FACTORS IN AVIATION
Simulations have been a xture of aviation training for
many years. Advances in simulator technology now enable
modern ight simulation to mimic very closely the look
and feel of real world ight operations. In spite of this,
responsible researchers, trainers, and simulation developers
should look beyond mere simulator delity to produce
meaningful training outcomes. Optimal simulation training
development can unquestionably benet from knowledge
and understanding of past, present, and future research in
this topic area. Due to decades of research dedicated to
simulation training in aviation, this may be easier said than
done. As a result, this volume of key writings will prove
invaluable as a reference, to help guide exploration of
critical research in the eld. By providing a mix of classic
articles that stand the test of time, and recent writings that
illuminate current issues, this volume informs a broad range
of topics relevant to simulation training in aviation.

Implementing Safety Management
Systems in Aviation
Edited by Alan J. Stolzer, Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University, USA, Carl D. Halford,
The MITRE Corporation, USA and John J. Goglia,
Independent Safety Consultant
ASHGATE STUDIES IN HUMAN FACTORS
FOR FLIGHT OPERATIONS
The International Civil Aviation Organization has mandated
that all of its member states implement Safety Management
Systems (SMS) in their aviation industries. Responding to
that call, many countries are now in various stages of SMS
development, implementation, and rulemaking.
In their rst book, Safety Management Systems in Aviation,
Stolzer, Halford, and Goglia provided a strong theoretical
framework for SMS, along with a brief discourse on SMS
implementation. This follow-up book provides a very brief
overview of SMS and offers signicant guidance and best
practices on implementing SMS programmes. Very specic
guidance is provided by industry experts from government,
industry, academia, and consulting, who share their
invaluable insights from rst-hand experience of all aspects
of effective SMS programmes. The contributing authors
come from all facets of aviation, including regulation
and oversight, airline, general aviation, military, airport,
maintenance, and industrial safety.
Chapters address important topics such as how to develop a
system description and perform task analyses, perspectives
on data sharing, strategies for gaining management support,
establishing a safety culture, approaches to auditing,
integrating emergency planning and SMS, and more.
Also included is a ctional narrative/story that can be
used as a case study on SMS implementation.
Implementing Safety Management Systems in Aviation
is written for safety professionals and students alike.

Situational Awareness
Edited by Eduardo Salas and Aaron S. Dietz,
both at University of Central Florida, USA
CRITICAL ESSAYS ON HUMAN FACTORS IN AVIATION
Situational awareness has become an increasingly
salient factor contributing to ight safety and operational
performance, and the research has burgeoned to cope
with the human performance challenges associated with
the installation of advanced avionics systems in modern
aircraft. The systematic study and application of situational
awareness has also extended beyond the cockpit to include
air trafc controllers and personnel operating within other
complex, high consequence work domains. This volume
offers a collection of essays that have made important
contributions to situational awareness research and practice.
To this end, it provides unique access to key readings
that address the conceptual development of situational
awareness, methods for its assessment, and applications to
enhance situational awareness through training and design.

Human Performance
on the Flight Deck
Don Harris, HFI Solutions Ltd, UK
Finally, a complete book that addresses the positive
contributions of Human Factors knowledge and Aviation
Psychology. A good description of how all of its facets come
together. A must reader. Written by a researcher and teacher
with extensive experience in coping with the best and worst
of humans working in one of the most rewarding industries
in the world. Take your time to read, learn and do not
forget: enjoy!
Peter Jorna, President,
European Association for Aviation Psychology
Taking an integrated, systems approach to dealing
exclusively with the human performance issues
encountered on the ight deck of the modern airliner, this
book describes the inter-relationships between the various
application areas of human factors, recognising that the
human contribution to the operation of an airliner does not
fall into neat pigeonholes. The relationship between areas
such as pilot selection, training, ight deck design and
safety management is continually emphasised within the
book. It also afrms the upside of human factors in aviation
the positive contribution that it can make to the industry
and avoids placing undue emphasis on when the human
component fails.
The book is divided into four main parts. Part one describes
the underpinning science base, with chapters on human
information processing, workload, situation awareness,
decision making, error and individual differences. Part two
of the book looks at the human in the system, containing
chapters on pilot selection, simulation and training, stress,
fatigue and alcohol, and environmental stressors. Part three
takes a closer look at the machine (the aircraft), beginning
with an examination of ight deck display design, followed
by chapters on aircraft control, ight deck automation, and
HCI on the ight deck. Part four completes the volume with
a consideration of safety management issues, both on the
ight deck and across the airline; the nal chapter in this
section looks at human factors for incident and accident
investigation.
The book is written for professionals within the aviation
industry, both on the ight deck and elsewhere, for post-
graduate students and for researchers working in the area.

The Neurosciences and the
Practice of Aviation Medicine
Edited by Anthony N. Nicholson,
King's College London, UK
This book brings the neurosciences to operational and
clinical aviation medicine. It is concerned with the
physiology and pathology of circadian rhythmicity,
orientation, hypotension and hypoxia, and with disorders
of the central nervous system relevant to the practice of
aviation medicine.
The chapters on circadian rhythmicity and orientation
deal with the impaired alertness and sleep disturbance
associated with desynchrony and with the effects of
linear and angular accelerations on spatial awareness.
Hypotension and hypoxia cover cerebral function
during increased gravitational stress, clinical aspects of
exposure to acute hypoxia, the mild hypoxia of the cabin
of transport aircraft, adaptation and acclimatization to
altitude and decompression at extreme altitudes and
in space.
Disorders of particular signicance to the practice of
aviation medicine such as excessive daytime sleepiness,
epilepsy, syncope, hypoglycaemia, headache and
traumatic brain injury are covered, while neuro-
ophthalmology, the vestibular system and hearing also
receive detailed attention. The potentially adverse effects
of the aviation environment and of disorders of the
nervous system are brought together, and the text covers
the neurological examination as it relates to aircrew and
explores current management and therapeutics.
The Neurosciences and the Practice of Aviation Medicine
is an essential work for those involved in the practice
of aviation medicine where familiarity with the effects
of the aviation environment on the nervous system and
understanding the pathophysiology of relevant clinical
disorders are of prime concern. The authors from leading
centres of excellence are physiologists concerned with the
aviation environment and physicians involved in the day-
to-day practice of medicine.
