Reading

We have made it half way

through our first read aloud book,
Because of Mr. Terupt. This book is
told from the perspective of seven
fifth graders and their experiences
with their first year teacher, Mr.
Terupt. So far, this book has brought
up great discussions on bullying, re-
spect, and empathizing with others.
Along with read aloud, we have worked
on picking just right books and build-
ing reading stamina.
MATH
Students practiced ordering
whole numbers and decimals.
Students also practiced writing
whole numbers through the bil-
lions in word form, standard form,
and expanded form.

Dear Families,
We have had a wonderful first
three weeks of school! We are getting
into the full swing of school and our days
are becoming routine. I have been very
proud of behavior this week and the good
example our class displays around school!
Overall, we have created an atmosphere
that promotes respect and hard work and
I am excited to see what the rest of
the year has in store!
Writing
Writers Workshop has developed
over the past few weeks! We have prac-
ticed a couple of brainstorming techniques
to help generate ideas for personal narra-
tives. Students have practiced writing
about turning points, a special person, spe-
cial places and strong emotions. What is
even more exciting is that students have
each started their own blogs! We will be
using these for homework next week!
Science

What is Oobleck? Ask your fifth
grader! On Friday, we were able to interact
with this liquid/solid substance. Students
practiced making hypotheses and then tested
their predictions. This week we also practiced
collecting data and recording it in a table in
our science notebooks!
