Iraq: Minorities Displaced By Conflict

As the conflict in Iraq intensifies, Iraqis are facing increased threats. Minorities who have lived
here for centuries are particularly vulnerable. On Thursday close to four thousand Christians
from the adjacent Ninewa Province fled to Irbil.

They sought shelter in schools, churches with families and relatives. For many this was not the
first time fleeing their homes.


Sadiyah is originally from Baghdad but fled to the Muslim area years ago thinking she would be
safer there. Today she finds herself again a woman without a home.

What happened is that our area was hit, three in the area died. We cant take this anymore. We
are being targeted. We dont want to die. We want to live. We dont want them to take our land
either. This is our right, this is the truth, thats whats happening.

Hundreds of displaced Iraqis gathered at this church awaiting an uncertain fate. Some left many
family members stranded behind.


Many in my family are still trapped there. Why? Why? Why cant we reach a solution? All my
relatives are there, waiting. What have we done to deserve this? They threatened them, surrender
or you will have to pay.

They prayed and appealed for peace and an end to the conflict that has torn Iraq apart for more
than a decade.


For many these church benches will be beds tonight. They sleep here hoping for better news
tomorrow.
