Hunger Games Civics Essay

Choose 1 of the 3 following prompts related to Civics and Economics and "Hunger Games" to write
about. A great response will be at least 5 full paragraphs, answer the questions, and provide examples
from class and the movie to support your writings.
Topic 1: Civic Duties and Responsibilities
In "Hunger Games" Citizens have a completely different set of civic responsibilities and duties from
those in the United States. In your first body paragraph define what are civic duties and provide
examples in the United States and Panem. In your next paragraph define civic responsibilities and
provide examples of civic responsibilities the United States and Panem. In your last body paragraph
explain the difference between these and how those differences came about.

Topic 2: Comparison of Governments
Hunger Games is said to take place in a fictional version of the United States. We know that in our
version of the United States that we have a representative democracy. In your first body paragraph
answer: What is a representative democracy and how do we know that the United States has one?
Next body paragraph answer: Is the government in "Hunger Games" a Democracy or is it another type of
government? What type of government do you think it is? Why do you think that? Then in your last
body paragraph, based on your classification of what type of government is in the "Hunger Games,"
compare (identify the similarities) and contrast (point out the differences) between the government in
the Hunger Games and the United States.

how they relate with governmental systems of other nations (e.g. Republicanism, federalism).
Topic 3: American Principles of Democracy
Hunger Games is supposed to take place in the future United States. However, is this still the same
United States? Choose 3 of the 5 Principles of American Democracy (Rule of Law, Limited Government,
Consent of the Governed, Individual Rights, Representative Democracy) to define and provide examples
of how these principles are being upheld in the United States but not in Panem (Hunger Games). Each
of these should be provided in a body paragraph.
