Alexandra Williams Skills I Need To Acquire To Become a Competitive Candidate
Diverse Experience: Though I have worked in multiple jobs that were very different from each other, I still feel I lack experience that many of my peers have. I have never worked a retail or restaurant job, I went straight from my first job at a health club, to a nine-to-five office job. Though it may not be very important, I have never really worked with people my age. I have always worked with people much older than I am, and I feel that working with your peers can be challenging in terms of competitiveness, and that experience is important in building you as a professional. Also, I have never had to train anyone for a position, and though these many seem like small things I am worried that they may hinder my performance in my career and make me appear inferior to my peers who have had these experiences.
Interview Professionalism: A part of the job description that really stood out to me was the effective communication skills part of the requirements. Through both of the positions I have held, I have been hired through connections of some sort. At Orchards Athletic Club, my manager was my mother so I did not have to go through an interview. Luckily enough for me, my current job was also given to me without an interview, even though it is a very competitive position. Though I enjoyed not going through the interview, I have never had to go through the process which most of my peers probably have. I feel that this course has really, and will really, help my professionalism and knowledge of what I need to have a successful interview. Through making my working resume, I have realized the areas in my interview process that can use a little extra work.
Higher Education/Knowledge/Coursework: I believe that the biggest thing I can improve on will be related to the courses and degree I am currently working towards. So far in my collegiate career, I have taken mostly my required courses that are not my HDFS courses. I am excited to gain the knowledge of these courses and use that to better my abilities as a Human Development and Family Studies Major. Through the process of this assignment, I have also realized that I need to take the classes recommended for Director Of Qualifications. Though these courses are not required for my degree, they will give me a competitive edge over my peers as well as a diverse range of possibilities and positions when searching for a career. Also through the job description I have learned that it is desirable have a masters degree as well.
Experience with Youth/Adolescence: Though I have had lots of hours of experience with adolescence in my day care job, I have not had enough diversity in the group of children I have worked with. Even though working at the day care for two years brought lots of different children through our doors, I did not have any experience with special needs children. I feel that this would as give me an upper hand in as compared to my peers. Though the job description states that experience with children is desired and not required, I feel that those are always the qualifications you should aim for so to stand out.
Studying Skills: For this job, in order to apply for the Early Childhood Education licensure, you must take a PLACE exam to be accepted into the program. Tests, or should I say preparing for tests, have always been an area that I could use improvement on. In order to pass, and do extremely well on this exam, I will need to better my studying habits. Attending info sessions at our TILT building about test taking could really help better my knowledge of how to study effectively. This way, I could not only have an impressive resume, but demonstrate that I have the knowledge behind it as well.
