Duration

Prior knowledge of learners (What do they already know?)
Students may already know that fires are dangerous and can start up easily
Students know that major bushfires can happen in our area and have happened before (previous
lesson)
Students know correct safety procedure for a fire drill at school (stop what are you are doing and
listen to instructions)
The importance of environments to animals and people, and different views on how they can be
protected (ACHGK022)
Lesson objective/s
To gather important information from the excursion about bushfires. Use the information gathered to
create a display board. Gain further information by doing individual research.
Evidence of learning
Students input into the display board which will showcase the information that students have learnt
about bushfires. The display board will focus on three main questions: What are the main causes?
What impact does a bushfire have on the environment, people, and animal? What can we do to
reduce the impact? The effectiveness of students research will also be assessed.

Introduction
Introducing
the topic
Engagement
of the
learners
Revise what was learnt last lesson: what did we look at?
Who can remember the type of questions we asked at the fire
station?
Explain that we are going to design and create an information
pamphlet to give to people at this school and to people that
live nearby to help them get prepared for bush fire season.
Brainstorm: What are some main topics that these people
need to know?*do three-minute pause here for students to
revise.
Draw attention to the blank display board and explain that this
is our planning and information board to help us record the
main information that we need to have in our information
pamphlets once we start them.

Lesson Body
Delivering
the content
through
specific
strategies
Re-watch the video recording or voice recorder of the
excursion questions.
Ask students to listen well or write down the important notes
in their books so that they can share the main points with the
class
Write the main questions that need to be addressed on the
display board-What impact do bushfires have on people and
the environment? What can we do to reduce the impact? (key
questions)
Ask students for what the fire fighter said. Also add in new
ideas. e.g cleaning up the yard, make sure you have an escape
plan or you are prepared, how bushfires are started.
Also ask additional questions-What are ways to prepare a
house for bushfire season? What could we do in our school to
prepare it for bushfire season? What are the causes of
bushfires and what do you do if you see a fire being started?
Explain the importance of being prepared for an emergency
and to speak to an adult or if no one is home call 000.
What do you think happens to the environment after a fire?
Explain that land is burnt and it may eventually grow back but
it takes a very long time.
Students are to now research further information to assist
with creating the information pamphlet. Explain the
importance of researching on good sources so important
websites. What are some of these?
Students write key research information into books and the
website gathered from.

Main topics or
questions as
discussed in
intro.

Students that
are below
class level with
reading and
writing can be
given websites
to assist. Print
out the
information
for these
students
instead.

Summarizing
the lesson
Show the class the pictures of the fire truck and fire equipment
that is used for jobs like putting out a bushfire (appendix 3)
Pass around pictures and place the pictures up on the display
board as well.
Explain the seriousness of bushfires to the environment and to
people
Remind that we are going to be making an information
pamphlet for people around our school.
Explain each
picture and
pass round for
everyone to
see.

Reflection:
Will students be able to recall valuable notes from the video or recording?
Have I provided enough material to ensure the lesson is engaging for students?
Will students be capable of finding information from websites?
