! 3M began as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
in 1905 in Two Harbors Minnesota.
! A group of five investors formed the company to
mine what they thought was a mineral that could
be used in grinding wheels.
! This venture failed they moved to Duluth,
Minnesota to manufacture sandpaper.

! By 1910 Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
had gained additional investors and moved to
St. Paul Minnesota.
! In 1916 Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
now referred to as 3M or the mining paid its
first dividend of 6 cents a share.

without interruption for more than 97 years, the
last 56 with increases.

When we do an acquisition in an emerging
market, of a brand or a small to midsize company,
we generally keep that operating company
separate and decentralized. As for integration,
we first empower the local team to manage the
acquired business and follow the established
business model.
