Observation sheet

Date: 5/8/14
PRT: Lua

Focus of Observation
Classroom layout/routines:
Gaining students attention
Giving instructions
Bookwork/presentation (students)
Allocation of class resources

Context:
Beginning of the day and the
beginning of mathematics
Timeline of events observed:
8.55-9.30; children coming in to school then half an
hour into Maths lesson.
Outcomes:

Successes & Strengths:
Gaining students attention/giving instructions at all times you were respectful. You made
statements clear and pre-empted the behaviours you wished to see; eg Now who remembers how
we sit when we do the roll? Are we going to talk?
You also allowed for some latitude for students to make choices themselves eg. Can you find a
number and I will ask you what it is. To those who are still learning the routines of school, you re-
established desired behaviours eg Nanjeke turn around (in a whisper)
Bookwork/presentation (students)
Lua presented written work on the wall for the students/ parents to see a continuum of
stages of learning. Also on the wall were photos of each student in a star of colours and
their name written underneath; very effective and bright. The room is becoming theirs with
a wonderful shop and attention to many facets of number eg cardinal numbers, ordinal
numbers and written numbers. In the maths lesson I saw this morning Lua was recording the
learning in the teachers/students modelling/number book. Students were able to make
many connections in the maths lesson because of pointing out familiar resources they had
made, so they are becoming useful resources to which children can refer.
Allocation of resources
We need to put out a request for all junior teachers to see what they could share. After this
Lua will make an order for maths any resources she needs. The windows need to be cleaned
and the general paintwork is quite old and dated so perhaps Mr Johnson could help there. Lua
has no laptops, tablets or stand-alone computers. One parent has offered to try to find her 6
laptops but doesnt think they will be available this year.
Lua, keep up the fantastic work! It is such a pleasure to partner with you and do jump jam
and music!

Areas of Development
Listening for little clever anecdotes from
your students eg Ameer. I saw a rainbow when
it was sunny; it was raining and sunny and I saw a
big, big rainbow.
Jacob 4+4=8
Zane is gifted in mathematics according to
parents and you already have knowledge that
indeed, he is! What else could Zane cope
with? Does he need extra work to go and do
after his other work?
Action Plan to Achieve this
Notice and respond
Download JAM notes and begin testing
Jacob and Zane.
