IWS #2: Finding the Maximum

When deciding how many stops to put on your subway line, there are many factors to consider.
Tomorrow, I will give you an equation that you can use to predict the number of people that will ride
your subway based on the miles of track that it covers and the number of stops that it makes. In
order to use the equation to help maximize the number of people that will ride your train, we need
some practice maximizing systems of equations.

For each of the following, find the maximum value, given the constraints:

1) x + 17 when x ≤ 10 9) 3(x + 8) when x ≤ 11

2) 3x – 4 when x ≤ 9 10) ½ (5 + x) when 5x ≤ 35

3) x + 5 when 3x ≤ 21 11) x² when x ≤ 7

4) 2x + 10 when 5x ≤ 40 12) 100 / x when x ≥ 10

5) ½ x – 6 when x ≤ 60 13) 50 / x when 2x ≥ 10

6) ¾ x when 2x ≤ 80 14) x² + x + 3 when x² ≤ 25

7) x + 5 when x - 3 ≤ 10 15) x – 10 + 2x when 5x + 3 ≤ 23

8) x -1 when x + 4 ≤ 15 16) CHALLENGE: x + 1/x when 3 ≤ x ≤ 6

Maximization with Two Variables

Sometimes you will need to maximize an equation that has more than one variable. For example, you
might need to find the maximum number of people that would ride the train when given both the
track length and the number of stops.

For each of the following problems, find the maximum value, given the constraints:

1) x + y when x ≤ 5 and y ≤ 10 6) y(x + 5) when x / 2 ≤ 10 and 7y ≤ 14

2) x + 2y when x ≤ 10 and y – 3 ≤ 6 7) y / x when x ≥ 7 and y ≤ 14

3) 3x – 2y when x + 3 ≤ 11 and y ≤ 16 8) x / y when 2x ≤ 18 and y / 3 ≥ 3

4) ½ x + 2y when x + 2 ≤ 8 and y – 3 ≤ 9 9) y(2x + 2) when x ≤ 4 and y ≤ 10

5) x(y – 3) when 2x ≤ 4 and y ≤ 7 10) x(x + y + 1) when x ≤ 5 and y ≤ 8

CHALLENGE PROBLEM:

Find the maximum value: when 14m ≤ 200 and 1.5s ≤ 12
