D1: Kick Whilst Tripping (Exercise Drill)

The purpose of this drill is to familiarise the crew with the shut-in procedure that will be implemented
in the event of a kick during a trip. This drill should only be conducted when the Bottom-Hole
Assembly (BHA) is inside the last casing string.
Before the trip is started the !tanding "rders to the #riller will have been posted. This will be
intended as an action item.
When directed by the Company Representatie! the contractor Toolp"sher #ill instr"ct the
Driller to ass"me that a positie $lo#%check has been cond"cted! and to implement the
prescribed control proced"re as detailed in the &tanding 'rders.
!hut-in procedures to be adopted in the event of a kick whilst tripping are$
(%) Witho"t prior notice! the Company Representatie and &enior Contractor
Representatie #ill start the drill by man"ally raising the trip tank $loat to indicate a
rapid pit gain(
(&) The Driller is expected to take the $ollo#ing steps to sh"t in the #ell:
(a) &top other operations(
(b) )nstall the drill pipe sa$ety ale(
(c) 'pen the choke line ale(
(d) Close the ann"lar preenter(
(e) Record the casing and drill pipe press"re(
($) *oti$y the Company Representatie that the #ell is sh"t in(
(g) Record the time taken $or the drill on the )+DC Drilling
Report(
The contractor Toolpusher must ensure that the crews are correctly deployed and that each individual
completely understands their responsibilities.
The time taken for the crew to shut in the well should be recorded.
Having shut in the well preparations should be made to strip pipe. These preparations should include
lining up the e'uipment as re'uired assigning individual responsibilities and preparing the !tripping
(orksheet.
