Flowering Plants

The Flower
 Where meiosis and fertilization occur
Stamen
 The male
reproductive organ
is called the
stamen
 The stamen is
made up of the
anther on top and
the filament as
the rod beneath it.
 The anther makes
monoploid pollen
grains
The Pistil
 The female
reproductive organ
in a flower is called
the pistil.
 The pistil is made
up of the stigma
at the top, the
style which is a
tube that connects
the stigma to the
ovary on the
A perfect flower
 Flowers with both
sexual organs are
called perfect.
The Imperfect Flower
 A flower having only one sexual organ is
said to be imperfect
Pollination
 Def: transfer of
pollen grains from
anther to stigma
 Self-pollination:
transfer happens
within the same
flower or of a
flower from the
same plant
 Cross-pollination:
transfer of pollen
 Thick wall of pollen
grain prevents
dehydration of it’s
contents in a dry
environment
 After pollination,
pollen grain
germinates
(activates) on the
stigma and forms a
pollen tube, which
extends in to the
ovule
 Sperm nuclei are
formed and travel
down the tube
Fertilization and
Development
 Fusion of male and female nuclei in ovule

results in the formation of a zygote

 The Zygote will then develop into an
embryo
 The ripened ovule will develop into a seed
 The ripened ovary will develop into a fruit
What is the purpose of fruit?
 Fruit is used to transport and
disperse seeds to other areas.
 Have you ever seen an animal spit
out the seeds? Where do they go
 And for the record, you can not grow
a tree inside you if you swallow a
seed, that is what the seed wants
you to do!
The seed
 Comprised of a
seed coat and an
embryo
 Plant embryo:
 Hypocotyl: develops
into root
 Epicotyl: leaves and
upper portion of
cells
 Cotyledons:
Contains stored
Germination and Growth
 Under suitable conditions, seed will
germinate
 Sufficient moisture
 Proper temperature
 Sufficient oxygen
Meristematic Growth
 Growth in plants is restricted to
meristems
 Apical Meristems:
 Found in the tips of roots and stems
 Responsible for growth in length

 Lateral Meristems:
 Located in cambium (between xylem and
phloem)
 Responsible for growth in diameter.
