Part-time education in the arts (DKO) ExtraCurricular (Part-time) ArtEducation
reflection about goals in art-education
While being, some weeks ago, on a opening of new classrooms in one of the Flemish PAE schools for visual art, I suddenly realized myself that artists as teachers in artschools still are artists keeping freedom (and social engagement) high up in the agenda. This was illustrated by the video, created by one of the teachers: Ruben Ver Berne, a compilation of the teachers answers on the question (given by the director Kim Deboes): What does the school for part time art education visual arts means for you? I also discovered for myself that this answers the real goals are they use and they do it with good results.

An overview of the quotes in this video: Herman Vanbrabant: The Academy provides a forum for the creative mind Brigitte Van Wesemael: Show youngsters - people what a creativity there is in them and also let it come true Evelien Verstappen: An artistic workplace where it bustles with passion, daring and experiment Margot Appels: Art as an infinitely adventure Flor Lodewijckx: The ability to get to develop (hidden) talents under the guidance of talented teachers. Through drawing and working with color and form study you develop a personal vision and nuanced view on society Ilse Heylen: Melting pot of enthusiasm, inspiration and creativity Mady Vos: The academy is a place where teachers and pupils can be limitless creative Freija Van Esbroeck: The academy offers me the opportunity to get to know new people in the higher grade and work with them to discover their creativity, to gain new insights and be happy with what one can accomplish. In the lower stage I will still be surprised by the originality of the young students, the exuberant and spontaneous in their work Marianne Hildebert: Guaranteeing the cultural development of man Geert Koekoeckx: The academy is giving and get Brigitte Simons: Murakami: artists are always survivors in a world that wasnt waiting for them. Feeling themself differently and probably also being different, they force off in their work the right to be who they are, what they are and where they are. > The academy is the place where this is made possible. Annelies Claes: An adventurous way through a fascinating world of art Ilse Geens: Our academy = a house full of artistic creativity and inspiration Claire Vercammen: Our academy is a free port where people can detoxify the pressure of functionality and rationality. And in the freedom and the joy of being creative they learn to discover and develop their deepest self Lieve Smets: Seek and find Hugo Heylen: A free port for doers Jenny Verbinnen: A home where art belongs Hilde Hermans: Pass on my artistic passion to my students make me a happy person Ilse Vandepoel: To draw, dream, enjoy Ingrid Wouters: A house with many rooms, full of color, imagination and creativity. Jan Boeckx: I do this with great pleasure, for the students Annick Daems: The academy means to me to be an outlet valve to bring my creativity to the kids and enjoy the works they create. Jan Rosseels: The academy means a lot to me, especially freedom to bring creativity in a quirky way to the children Ruben Ver Berne: Where passion and creativity come together Leen Van de Plas: The academy is for me a treasure chest that helps you, and learn to make your own treasures Karin Vanderzande: A place where creativity and innovation go hand in hand Kari Van Rooy: Passion, radiance, discover, above all having enthusiasm Marc Cruysberghs: A new horizon Katrien Nijs: A haven for experimentation and personal development amidst soulmates Vera Van Hoeij: My passion for clay in all its facets pass on with love Lieve Nuyts: Love, work, play Vanessa Jespers: Place where: You cant up creativity. In workshops there is room for new ideas, there is place to meet challenges and to explore new horizons. Due to the diversity of students and teachers, the academy is a melting pot of creativity Maarten Ceulemans: The place where I share my passion Lien Verdonck: The academy is a creative environment where students learn from each other every day Martine Verstreken: I agree with the thesis of Picasso: Every child is an artist. The difficulty is to stay it when you grow up
When I tried to classify the goals I saw for myself 4 categories: 1. Context, conditions or attitudes that teachers needed to teach art 2. The content, what about art they like the students to acquire 3. The technic skills, technics the students should use, master and acquire 4. The attitudes that are necessary for students to develop art skills
context/conditions/ attitudes teachers content technics/skills attitudes students forum creative mind (themselves) discover passion infinitely adventure creativity (themselves) develop daring adventurous color discover (their deepest self) enthusiasm free port form develop (their deepest self) limitless creative freedom personal vision experiment giving and getting fascinating nuanced view (on society) seek and find enjoying the joy inspiration searching meeting challenges a home for art imagination discover/explore accomplish a goal together innovation doing/work outlet valve spontaneous capacity drawing helpfull cultural development dreaming radiance talents development having fun/play new horizon personal development studying (form/color/) passing passion to gain new insights love diversity a refreshing look learn from each other to know new people the exuberant
These goals could be reduced (by generalization and combining some of them, and by deleting overlaps and more specific detailing)
context/conditions/ attitudes teachers content technics/skills attitudes students freedom visual aspects acting motivation passion personal development learn from each other perseverance learn from the other confidence problem solving selfsteering-selfdevelopment research-observation
Generalizing further more the remaining targets provided the following results:
Students will learn: to be independently in the contemplation and practice of art (to give meaning to art) by practicing and studying the art, in a continuous process, lifelong learning, and to prepare (for those who want) for graduate study in the arts.
MY OPINION:
Art teachers and art schools are the experts in art education. Give them the resources and responsibility in trust and freedom to maintain/develop quality education in art. To make this possible the government only has to guide the schools with a few general and open targets to achieve the desired level of artistry.

Students will learn: Students have to learn: to be independently in the contemplation and practice of art (to give meaning to art) Participants learn to critically approach and experience all art forms (= 2 nd goal), by practicing and studying the art, as well as practising these art forms themselves, individually or in group (e.g. in an orchestra, dance group, or theatre company) (= 3 nd goal). in a continuous process, lifelong learning, Part- time education in the arts is aimed at artistic education of children and adults and, in doing so, at providing a contribution to their personal development (= 1 st goal: lifelong learning). and to prepare (for those who want) for graduate study in the arts In addition, part-time education in the arts gives young people who opt for a professional career in the arts the possibility to thoroughly prepare for higher education in the arts (= 4 th goal).
