Health Education Standards

Students will understand the importance of advocating for nutritional food choices and
physical activity for themselves and at school.
Students will identify insufficiencies of nutritional and physical activity needs in schools

Materials
I will be using a short PowerPoint presentation to discuss the impact of advocating and the
benefits of advocating for nutrition and physical activity. Students will need laptops to complete
an online survey predicting the level of nutrition and physical activity that they lead. Groups
will need large poster paper and markers to create advocacy signs to display throughout the
school.


Introduction: 15-20 minutes_______________________
Today we are going to discuss the importance of nutrition and physical activity, not only
for ourselves but for others as well. We are going to explore the benefits of advocating
for nutrition and physical activity to improve individually and influence others.
Advocating to our environment will increase social health and make it much easier to
make personal choices.

Why do we advocate?
For ourselves and others!


Students will complete questionnaire to see how they rank
Do they need to advocate for themselves first
Should they advocate for others

Bring up power point presentation that discusses the benefits and ways of advocating for
nutrition and physical activity.

B. Decreases social health problems (boosts immune system)
1. Flu
2. Cold
3. Strep throat
4. Bronchitis

4. Attentiveness/Concentration
D. Makes it easier to lead a healthy lifestyle (chips/pop wont be offered)

E. Ways to Advocate-(medial, flyers ect..)

Activity: 35 minutes_________________________
1) Students will be split into groups of 3-4
2) Design a poster advocating for nutrition and physical activity
3) Poster must include
Creativity
Advocate 3 changes that will increase nutrition and physical activities in the
school
Benefits of nutrition and physical activity (dont copy examples from PP)




Conclusion: 5 minutes_________________________

1) Make sure all supplies are cleaned up
2) Allow time after class, lunch, or after school to complete posters
3) Students will choose a location to hang poster in the school
