Assignment 1: Information Literacy

1&2.

Name: Which Carrier Has the Best Deal for the IPhone 6?

Summary:

This article was very informative. Goldman talked about the competition of cellphones
providers to get more people to buy the IPhone 6 from them. In separating and talking about each
provider, Goldman displayed the pros and cons, very simplistically, by sharing what each
provider would do to try to make people buy the new IPhone 6 from them. For example, both
Sprint and Verizon are going to implement news to get attention. Sprint has IPhone for life, in
which, they will make their customers pay $50 every month and $20 every month to get the
IPhone 6, but after two years, you can get an IPhone for free; while Verizon, is trying to do
something different. Their plan is free IPhone 6, by letting their customer trade in a phone for
$200 off the upfront cost of the new 16GB IPhone 6. Overall, I learned from this article that you
have to think the most savvy to get more customers to buy a certain product from you and that
the need for people to have the newest technology is becoming more important than ever before.
(Goldman, 2014)
3.
A. I used Google search engine, and typed in the key words (Which Carrier Has the Best
Deal for the IPhone 6?) to get about 81,600,000 results in .56 seconds. Most of the result
options on the first page are websites to where to go buy the new IPhone, or how to buy it
before anyone else. However, the first website on the Google results gave me some of the
same information I found in the article I read from CNN.net. (Graziano, 2014)
B. The next search engine I used was Bing. Bing gave me 47,000,000 results, but didnt tell
me how fast it found all the results. Most of the results on the Bing search engine have
more in depth searches on the keywords I put in. The first website I clicked on said
almost the exact same information, just a little more condensed and concise than the
CNN, net article I read. (KFOR-TV & L. Noland & CNN Wire , 2014)
C. The BING search engine was better than the Google. BING had a more meaningful
search than Google; in which, it had less results and took more time, but it had the results
displayed the most concise information to help me find out what I need to know from
typing in the keywords. However, Google had a more appealing and attractive display of
results to look at than BING, but overall I would say that BING did a better job at the
search.

R It is relevant because the article talks about the new IPhone 6, which is a mobile
technology and one of new emerging technologies of 2014.
A David Goldman was the author of this article; he is a CNN technology editor which
makes him qualified to write this article. CNN, a proven viable source for information hired
David to be a technology editor because he mustve been very knowledgeable about technology
and think that he can help assist CNN to stay a truth source to go for information.
A The information is trustworthy, not just because its from CNN.com, but because I
looked more in depth on how we know CNN articles are accurate, and found that the overseers
of all the CNN articles have an established policy to be thoughtful, truthful, and relevant, which
they all have to follow.
P This article was written to inform the possible consumers of an IPhone 6 of all the
possibilities of how and which carrier would be considered the best for them when buying an
IPhone 6. This article shows no bias, but covers all the good attributes that each carrier listed can
have when thinking about buying an IPhone 6.
5.
A. I used the ProQuest, a CCBC Database library, and used the same keywords from when I
used the internet search engine (Which Carrier Has the Best Deal for the IPhone 6?), and
search engine only found 179 results, and most of them just took out one or two of my
keywords to help me find an article relevant to what I want to read about. In addition, the
first article I opened was very bland and truth, but it lacked attractiveness. I couldnt find
any recent articles about the IPhone 6 besides the one that talk about its coming. The
article didnt tell me about which carrier would be the best to get an IPhone 6, but it told
me a whole bunch of back story about the IPhone 6 . (Coffin, 2007)
B. Next, I used Academic Search Premier, another CCBC Database Library, continuing the
same process as before with the same keywords (Which Carrier Has the Best Deal for the
IPhone 6?) to keep everything fair. However, for this search engine, I had to modify the
search to make search find for the most recent articles from 2014 and it gave me only 56
results. Most of them were not relevant to what I was aiming to find my information
about and the closest one only talked about Apple IPhone sales and how they came up
short. (Wakabayashi, 2014)
6.
A. The Internet search engines had made my search process so much easier than the Journal
search.

B. The Internet search engines were a lot faster than the Journal articles, but there were a lot
more results than the Journal articles. The Journal search spent more time trying to search
more deeply and try to find the closest articles to your keywords, but when I searched it
just gave a little number of results with actual relevance.
C. There was a lot more authority in the Journal articles, probably because it run by CCBC
and has strict limits on what it can display to users. However, the Internet search had less
authority and showing more options, that may not be as relevant sometimes, but giving
more free will to searching.
