Phuket, Thailand

Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon

were styles awarded to Than Phuying

Chan , wife of the then recently deceased governor of Phuket Province, and her sister, Khun
Muk , who defended the island in the late eighteenth century. According to popular belief, they
repelled a five-week invasion by Burmese in 1785, by dressing up as male soldiers and rallying
Siamese troops. Chan and Muk were later honored by King Rama I with the Thai honorific Thao,
as Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Sri Sunthon, respectively.

Foreword Speech from
President of International Pencak Silat Federation
to the 16th Pencak Silat World Championship, Phuket, Thailand
January 2015
The objective of organising the Pencak Silat World Championship is mainly to gather all the Silat
participants from all around the globe and let them compete competitively whilst representing
their own country.
After the previous management of Pencak Silat Association of Thailand hosted the 15th Pencak
Silat World Championship 2012 in Chiang Rai Rajabhat University - Thailand, now with the new
line-up of the management I would like to convey a heartiest congratulation to Pencak Silat
Association of Thailand (PSAT) and the Organising Committee for the spirit to take up and host
the 16th Pencak Silat World Championship 2015 which this year will be held in Phuket - Thailand!
Phuket is a breath-taking island with its diverse ethnic groups, cultures, architectural influence,
and fine cuisine. I can ascertain that the participants will be able to compete
and fight as calm as the sea, as breezy as the wind, and as friendly as the
local there. Phuket is a complete tourist destination, other than its
world famous diving sites and sea, they will be known later as a country
that once hosted the Pencak Silat World Championship.
As this is another platform to promote the sport of Pencak Silat to
the world, the association is making a commendable moves and I believe
the world is looking forward to the championship. I wish to thank
Pencak Silat Association of Thailand for taking a step and being
pro-activetowards the development of the sport in and hosting it in a
humble island, Phuket! Hopefully, Pencak Silat Association of Thailand
will set an example to all other Pencak Silat association and
federation in the world to inspire them to organise more
sporting events, in order to promote the sport and bringing
Pencak Silat to another level in the global scene.
Lastly, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all
the participants and teams. The camaraderie and relationship,
as well as collaborations you formed here will help bond
the fraternity of Pencak Silat in the world. I wish all
participants the best of luck, and may the best country win!

On this auspicious occasion that Thailand has been given an honor by the International Pencak Silat
Federation to host the 16th World Pencak Silat Championship 2015 from 7-17 January 2015 in Phuket, Thailand,
I deem it is a great privilege for us all to show Thailands potential as a host of an international sporting event.
This would also be a good start for our youth athletes to take part in this significant competition where 47 member
countries will compete. I believe that the competition will also inspire Thai youth to take up sports more seriously and
this helps creating new generation of athletes.

Phuket, the Pearl of Andaman Sea, is very famous, not only for its splendid scenery but also its capacity
as a fantastic venue for a sports competition at both national and international levels. I believe that all the
participating countries will recieve a warm welcome and hospitality of the people of Phuket and gain memorable
experience from the competition.

I would like to express my deep appreciation to Pencak Silat Association of Thailand, the organizing
committee and all supported agents for the great dedication and effort they have put in for the achievement of the
event. May all the success come to the concerned people and good luck for all the athletes in the competition.

Thailand and Phuket Information

About Kingdom of Thailand

Thailand located in the center of Southeast Asia. The country is truly heart of region. Looking over a map
of Thailand will reveal a country whose border form the rough shape of an elephant's head- the head of ears forming
the mostly landlocked northern and eastern provinces and the trunk extending down the Malaysian peninsula between
the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.
Covering an area of approximately 514,000 square kilometers (200,000 sq miles), it is the 50th largest country in the
world, most nearly equal in size to Spain. Located just 15 degrees north of the equator, Thailand has a tropical climate
and temperatures typically range from 19 to 38 degrees C (66-100F) Monsoon rains fall predominately from May
to July and cooler, drier weather occurs around November and December. Although the geographical boundaries of
Thailand all fall within the tropics, Thailand's four primary regions are each geographically distinct from each other.
Stretching down the Malay Peninsula, the slender trunk of the figurative elephant separates the Andaman
Sea from the Gulf of Thailand, providing Thailand with beaches and islands along opposing shores. Once, the
sheltered coves of the narrow Isthmus of Kra were an important spot along ancient, strategic trading routes. Today,
Phuket and Samui island are equally important as tourist destinations, though both coasts also contain numerous
historical attractions as well as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and spectacular forests, waterfalls and beaches.
In addition, Thailand is divided into 76 political provinces with Bangkok serving as the political , commercial,
industrial, educational, and entertainment capital of the country.
