Geography of Malabar Coast
Concept: Globalization
Research Questions: How did spice production in Malabar Coast lead to
globalization between the East and West?

Background Information:
o Indias south west coast

o Canals and lagoons formed waterways
Home of spices, influenced European countries to explore the East

century)
o Whole region was eventually controlled by British near the end of
18

century
Malabar brought in different countries because of trading, which lead to
these countries depending on each other for luxury goods such as spices
European traders were intrigued by the shipping qualities of Malabar
As of today, the United States is the highest in spice imports

SUMMARIES/PARAGRAPHS

The Malabar Coast, located on the southwest part of India led to many
interactions between the East and the West. Since so many countries were
attracted to Malabar, they came together and depended on each other for certain
goods. Because of all the spices in Malabar, European countries were soon
intrigued in exploring the East, which led to expeditions around the world. The
Portuguese alone had about 7 trading posts in Malabar. Malabar trading posts
were not only established by Portugal, but also the Dutch and French. Due to the
high demand for the spice trade, lots of countries came together in order to gain
control. In conclusion, the Malabar Coast made countries interdependent for
goods and power amongst trading, which then allowed interactions for this
trade, otherwise known as globalization.

Afonso dAlbuquerque was a Portuguese conqueror. His many conquests to
capture different territories brought much power for himself and Portugal. In
order to increase and stabilize his power, Afonso would build permanent
fortresses and populations, therefore securing ownership of captured territory.
Afonso established a trading post near the red sea, which cuts trading from India
and the Arabs. Afterwards, he captured Hormuz and enabled trade between
Persia and Europe. Afonso also captured the main location of spice trade, which
was Malacca. With the help of his military skills and choices of strategic areas to
conquer, Afonso diverted trading to his lands, which gives Portugal the ultimate
power over trading. After Portugal had control of the spice trade, all the
countries would come to it for goods, increasing Portugals power and also the
convergence of other countries.

Prince Henry The Navigator is a Portuguese prince, explorer, and soldier. Not
only did Prince Henry improve exploration for Portugal, but he also helped
increase the trading profits. The reason for exploration and trading improving
was due to some of Prince Henrys accomplishments. Although Prince Henry is
recognized as The Navigator, he hasnt been on many expeditions; hes only
supported them. His assistance in these expeditions allowed Portugal to be the
first to sail to Africas Gambia River. The expeditions also helped create maps to
establish trade and sea routes. After visiting Western Africa, Prince Henry got a
hold of Slave and Gold trade. In 1448, the trade of Slaves and Gold increased in
profit, which also increased cash flow and wealth for Portugal. With the help of
Henry the Navigator, Portugals trade and exploration did well. After seeing
Portugal do well in this area, it is most likely that other countries came together
and set off for expeditions in hopes of new lands or trading opportunities.

PLAN EVALUATION
After following through with my plan above, I found it successful for the most
part in terms of organizing my time correctly. Some major factors that threw me
off a little bit would be the time I spent researching, it took me longer than
expected. I also found that I couldnt work on this task during certain times due
to other assessments. I still followed my plan pretty well, the timings were just a
bit off, and I switched my research topic. Despite the due date change, I
technically finished on time according to the old due date, so my plan worked ok.
