Collection Management Policy- Public Library

Policy Statement

This public library will provide material for all individuals ranging in different ages and cultures
to offer access to information and ideas for ones enrichment, enhancement and enlightenment.

Purpose

To ensure that every individual will have access to materials this public library will select and
preserve items for everyday use. The materials that this library will select and preserve will
consist of: print, non- print and electronics. The purpose of selecting and preserving these items
are for patrons everyday need to fulfill the want to gain information. Children, pre-teens,
teenagers and adults will find materials within this location and can borrow items pertaining to
the age. For all individuals, regardless of background or culture this library will select and
preserve items ranging in different individual values.

Range of Collection

Print Materials

Non- fiction and fiction books for children to adults are offered with material selected for
the specific age group which will increase supplementation for all individuals. This
library does support Accelerated Reader and have materials in the Children and Young
Adult department for ones enrichment and continuation in education and literacy.
Materials will be in the form of hardback and paperback.

Children

Between the ages of infancy to 12 years- old parents and preteens can choose
print materials for developing literacy and continuing education.

Baby

0-17 months will have print items available, such as board books that will
introduce books to an infant.

Toddler

Material available for ages 18-35 months will consist of print selections
that can be used to continue becoming familiar with books.

Pre- School

To develop a childs reading skills and to prepare for learning
academically, the elementary level, ages 3-5 will benefit from these
materials.

Elementary and Pre- Teen

Keeping literacy and education important ages 6-12 can use print items in
this selection such as: picture and chapter books.

Young Adult

Items in this selection are fitting for ages 13-17 years- old. Those that use this
section will find material to read for leisure, enrichment and finding more
information for daily use.

Adult

Ages 18 years and older can use print items for enlightenment and the availability
to increase information.

Foreign Language

This section will have items collected for children, pre- teens, teens and adults
with materials primarily written in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, French and
German.

Non- Print Materials

Items in various sections will consist of information, visuals and sound on a device where
one can access.

Books on Discs

Consist of Compact Discs that will have a narrator reading the words of a book.
Items in this selection are available in material suitable for children, pre- teens,
young adults and adults. The childrens books will have a book along with the
compact disc other sections will have primarily audio available.

Will be accessible by using headphones where one can listen to the audio version
of the book on a small handheld device.

Compact Discs

Individuals will find tunes of many genres of music in this section. Some of the
genres of music are: jazz, classical, soundtracks, pop, christian, r&b, reggae, etc.
There are also compact discs available for children, such as, Disney songs.

Digital Video Discs

Movies with categories consisting of: drama, horror, comedy, adventure, foreign,
sci- fi, animation, etc. Are for the viewers enjoyment and to increase knowledge
with fiction and non- fiction items. Digital Video Discs are also accessible for
children with juvenile content throughout.

Electronics

Public computers and netbooks are available for access. The electronics receive updates
for attainable and ease of access.

Reserved Materials

Limited and historical items in print and non- print are offered to view within the library
but are not available to borrow from the library. Due to the narrow selection these
materials are preserved for historical value.

Periodicals

Magazines and newspapers are available for individuals to read. Magazines are kept for a
year and available for checkout after a month of a new subscription. Newspapers are not
for borrowing and only available to read within the library since one copy per day/ week
is available at this location. The newspapers are kept for a three month period.

Collection Maintenance

Providing materials that are in good condition and updated for users will entail employees to
uphold, preserve and care for the collection. Outdated, bad conditioned, multiple copies, unused
etc. are all items that will be de- selected from each collection. The de- selection process will
occur every six months or as needed to upkeep the materials for print and non- print items.
Electronics will be updated periodically for current access for individuals. Continuing the de-
selection process will also lead staff to receive and request new material to replace de- selected
items.

This library does accept material donations consisting of: books, magazines, CDs and DVDs.
The donated items will be considered for sale, additions to collections, discarded or donations to
Goodwill. Donations considered to sale will be available for purchase for library users; where-
as, all profit will be added to the library funds to create more programs, materials and updates at
this location. Items that will be discarded are not available for sale and are in bad condition.
Discarded items are not readable and will have to be disposed. Materials that Goodwill desire to
accept are in readable and fair condition but are not in good condition to sale, discard or add to
the collection.

Selecting Materials

To continue the upkeep of materials and to provide users with current and good conditioned
materials selecting and adding new items to the collection is needed.

Items will be selected and added depending but not limited to the following criteria:

The collections need
Demand of the item
Replacement of discarded item
Librarys Budget
Local author and subject importance
Publication Date
High publicity and critic reviews
Added value to the collection

Requesting Unavailable Materials for Users

If there is a need for a specific item that this library does not carry the user will have the option
of requesting the item through the Interlibrary Loan process. The process will send the individual
the item from a library outside of the county and mail the item to the individual and be available
for pick- up to borrow at this library location.
