Mr.

Loves New Mexico History Lesson Plans


Objective: Students will be able to locate the different provinces of New Mexico, present detailed
characteristics of the different provinces, and relate the information about provinces to their current
life.
Essential Questions
1. How does the specific province in New Mexico influence how I live?
2. Does the location of the province directly affect the society living there?
3. Can a persons interpersonal values be based off of his/hers geographic location?
4. Are the plants and animals characteristics based on their provinces environment?
5. Would Native pueblos have similar beliefs if they all lived in the same Province?
New Mexico State standards:
5-8 Benchmark 1-A. New Mexico-
5.explain how New Mexicans have adapted to their physical environments to meet their needs over
time (e.g., living in the desert, control over water resources, pueblo structure, highway system, use of
natural resources); and
6. Explain the impact of New Mexico on the development of the American west up to the present, to
include: availability of land (e.g., individual, government, railroad, tribal, etc.); government land
grants/treaties; transportation (e.g., wagons, railroads, automobile); identification and use of natural
and human resources; population growth and economic patterns; and cultural interactions among
indigenous and arriving populations and the resulting changes.

MONDAY
Introduction- I will have an informal discussion with students about New Mexico Provinces. I will try to
gage and see students knowledge of the content by asking them various questions such as, Dou you
know what the four provinces of New Mexico are What are some of the main characteristics of the
provinces?
Lesson One- I will be lecturing using a PowerPoint slide. Students will take Cornell Notes in their
notebooks of the content in the Power Point slides. I will occasionally stop and see if students are
following the lecture well.











TUESDAY
Lesson one (continued) I will finish up the rest of the lecture. Students will finish up their notes. I will
have a short Q and A with the students for 15 minutes.
Lesson two
Students will be given a blank map of New Mexico where they will have to draw border lines of each
province. Within each province students will draw the physical geographical characteristics such as
rivers and mountain ranges.
Lesson 3
Students will take out a piece of loose leaf paper and write six characteristics of each province. They will
pick one characteristic of each province and write a paragraph on how they find it interesting.





Wednesday
Lesson four
We will be in the computer lab today where students will be assigned one Native American Tribe in New
Mexico. Students will do 30 minutes of research, then they will write a 1 page response on facts that
they have found on the Native American tribe.
Lesson 5
Students will be assigned in one of four groups. Each group will construct a 3 dimensional display of the
province they are assigned. The displays should include geographical characteristics and wildlife (plant
and animals)

Thursday
Lesson 5 Continued
Students will be working with group on Province project. Materials will be provided by the instructor.
























Friday
Students will finish working on project with group. Each group will start picking presentation days.
Lesson Six
Students will login online and do a blog about their experience working on the Province project.
Next week
Students will present project
