Math This week we worked on identifying missing or extra information in

word problems. Miss Smith then spent a day reviewing the content from Top-
ic 5 with students for the test that students took yesterday. Today we be-
gan our next math topic on variables and expressions. Students will be doing
intro level algebra. Students will discover that it really isnt that bad as
long as they know their facts!
Reading Our story next week is called A Summers Trade. Its about a
boy who works hard to save up money in order to purchase a saddle he has
been wanting for a long time. Just when he has almost reached his goal fam-
ily illness causes him to make a decision on whether he will give up his dream
to help out his family in need. We will work on the reading skill of authors
purpose and continue to work on citing evidence from the text.
Grammar Next week we will be putting our sentence skills to the test by
identifying simple, compound, and complex sentences.
Writing This week Miss Smith worked with the class on writing a good
opinion piece using the 5 paragraph essay format we learned about last
week. You start with an introduction paragraph, three paragraphs focusing
on support for your thesis, and a concluding paragraph.
Spelling- Our list focuses on final syllables. This will be a tough test. The
best way to prepare for this test is to practice, practice, practice.

Social Studies We continued with our chapter on early European explor-
ers that discovered the world. We also learned more about Columbus and his
discoveries in the Americas as well as the Spanish Conquistadors and their
search for gold. We will finish up our chapter next week. Students will be fill-
ing out a study guide next Thursday which they can use to study for the
test which will be on the following Tuesday.
Science-This week we continued learning about our solar system. We have
taken our time reading and reviewing our lesson over the Solar System since
there is so much information. This week we focused on the suns position in
relation to the tilt of the Earth which causes seasons, the suns position and
how it causes shadows, and we began learning about the lunar phases. We
will really hit lunar phases hard next week as well.

Note From the Teacher:

Thanks again for all your support with the Tupperware fundraiser. Our orders will be
submitted in the next week and we should receive the product around two weeks after
that. Lets make this year a successful year of fundraising. The more we make off of the
fundraisers the less we have to charge you in the spring for our trip.
Next Friday we will have Fall Break! I will not be assigning any homework over the break.
Enjoy!
Speaking of homework.Im seeing a very bad trend occurring in our room with stu-
dents not completing homework. There is not that much homework assigned on a nightly
basis and students are given around 30 minutes to complete homework before they even
leave the room. There is no excuse for students to be entering in the morning and trying to
complete homework before the bell rings. Help me reinforce responsibility and accountabil-
ity on this front. Thanks! ~Mrs. Brosman
