Descriptive Title of Internship Position: Communications Intern at the Office of Sustainability

Job description including general duties to be undertaken as part of the internship:

! The students work should meet this description, the student should receive adequate
supervision, the student should have a safe place to work, and the student should have the
opportunity to fulfill learning requirements.

Keighley will take a 3 credit internship with our department, which means she
will need to work 10 hours per week in our office. Her weekly hours will be logged and
tracked. The tasks Keighley will be asked to do include the following: assist with Office
of Sustainability communications and marketing efforts; creating and updating contentfor
our website and social media; pitching story ideas to highlight campus sustainability;
interviewing University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff to showcase campus
sustainability efforts; taking pictures for the
departments website and social media; writing stories about campus sustainability;
assisting with the communications and promotion for the 2014 SustainableUMD
Magazine; helping and facilitating the creation of videos about sustainability efforts on
campus; assisting with general communications and marketing planning for the
department. During the course of her internship, Keighley will be given several
opportunities to have a hands on learning experience in the fields of public relations,
communications, marketing, and sustainability. I will rely on her and our other interns to
ensure that we have the strongest communications branding possible. Keighley will be
evaluated for her performance, commitment, and abilities to assist with our
communications efforts.

organization, and share information that may impact the students ability to do the job
including the level of internship course for which the student has registered.


Description of compensation including amount, how and when paid and treatment of taxes, as
well as, facilities, and supervision to be provided by the worksite organization to the student:
UNPAID INTERNSHIP; SUPERVISOR: ANDREW MUIR

Units of credit to be earned: 3 (require a minimum of 45 hours of work per credit)

Time frame of internship:
Start date: 9/15/2014
End date: 12/10/2014
Weekly schedule: Monday, Wednesday 12 p.m. 5 p.m.

Grading
Intern: The student should follow the syllabus provided by the instructor.

Supervisor: The supervisor should write an evaluation of the student and send it to the
instructor by semesters end. It should be signed and on company letterhead. This letter should
verify the number hours the student has worked and give a descriptive evaluation of the quality
of work provided by the student during the internship. A copy of the evaluation should be
provided to the student. Please note that students will be allowed to view the evaluation.

Instructors access to evaluate the student
Early in the internship the student should coordinate and the organization should welcome an
onsite visit at the worksite for the instructor. The onsite visit should include a tour of the facility
and the students workspace, and an opportunity to meet and talk briefly with the supervisor.

Student Interns Goals and Objectives (including project plan)
Goal: Understand how to manage and maintain successful social media accounts for an
organization.
Objective: Collaborate with other UM departments to create sustainability-related posts that are
relevant to all of the UM community.
Objective: Understand the needs and expectations of the audience, and learn how to
appropriately communicate with them.

Goal: Raise awareness of sustainable efforts on campus through SustainableUMD and
TerpsRecycle social media accounts.
Objective: Increase follower numbers across all social media accounts.
Objective: Engage a larger follower base beyond just UM students.

Project plan:
For this internship, the main project I have been assigned to is to maintain and manage the social
media accounts (Facebook, Youtube,Twitter, Instagram, Website) for the Office of Sustainability
and TerpsRecycle. Each week, I am responsible for monitoring the activity on these pages, such
as posts to pages, number of followers, views, shares, likes, etc. Through HootSuite, I will be
tasked with scheduling posts for the appropriate times. I am also responsible for updating sites
and engaging with followers by sharing events and posting interesting, relevant information.

Weather emergency plan and absenteeism policy
In case of a weather emergency or an absence, Andrew will allowed the communications interns
to work from home or make up the hours at another time. If there is a UMD weather emergency,
this applies to working at the Office of Sustainability. If there is inclement weather that the
supervisor deems unsafe, but is not deemed a weather emergency by UMD, Andrew will notify
