Podium : A platform for oral expression


We have an interesting story to share, known as
Podium which is turning out to be a fantastic
activity for our childrens language development.
Children them selves are rich resources for their
peers in this.
A deliberation made us start the Podium activity.
During this hour teacher and students sit together
to reflect on what they did the day before. It is
an individual activity enhanced by feedback of
group. During this each child stands up on the
podium and shares what s/he has done yesterday.
This activity gives a live feedback from childrens
end to the facilitator and this also turns out to
be strong source for the childrens individual
assessment. As we document on behalf of each
child.
We are gradually improving this activity. Now
we are having two podium activity for
different age group
- With younger children, which they all
sit in circle and interact with the facilitator
to share what they did yesterday.
- With older children, we plan in
advance before starting and then two
of the children comment on language
communication and some time on facts.

The practice of democracy in the school


functioning, our trust in our students and the
inclusive policies of the school have helped
shape the school into a friendly and caring space
for each and every student that helps them
learn and grow. A few key observations are:

Children are not afraid of AND School,


neither of academics. In fact not only do they
enjoy learning here, they also often like to stay
back in school.

Language Policy

Significant boost is observed in childrens


self-confidence. This is encouraging even for us
to observe, especially in the case of those
students whose sense of self had been critically
affected due to the extreme pressures of their
previous schools.

It has been decided that while nurturing a


multilingual atmosphere, AND School will be
an ENGLISH MEDIUM school with English as
the medium of instruction. The school will
encourage every childs home language in
the classroom processes and ensure proficiency
in both Hindi and English in each child.

The inclusive population of school students


has benefitted all and made the process of
learning rich and balanced. Issues like hygiene
v/s cleanliness, fragility v/s toughness etc. are
being tackled on a daily basis.

Affiliation to CBSE Board

The list is countless and we will share many


more anecdotes when we meet personally. To

AND School is gearing towards affiliation with


the Central Board of Secondary Education
(CBSE). In case any child prefers an
alternative, the option of National Open

Room for Numeracy & Logic

Night Stay
On 29 July we had a night stay at school.
Children under 5 years of age stayed back till
late evening and their parents were invited to
spend time with us at the school and take them
home. The older ones stayed back the night
and went home the following day.

Teaching-learning in the classroom depends, to


a large extent, on the school environment &
ethos. A safe, secure and happy school
environment can help children learn better and
achieve more. So instead of activities that
involve only paper-pencil tasks, it is suggested
that the child should also be given more of real
life oriented activities to do.
Hence, in this session we have started a new
activity of putting up a shopping mall in our
school. For this, children of age 6 onwards were
asked to bring different empty packets/ cartons
of medicines, soaps etc., which we throw away.

Everybody set up shops and started selling and
buying their items, using the educational currency.
Some children endeavored to earn but some
were reluctant. But in all this they were learning
about the exchange of money, also become
comfortable with number operations & numbers.
They are experiencing the value of money
which should continue in their real life as well.
They are also starting to get a sense of quantities,
weights, volumes etc. and moving towards
measurement concepts. .

A range of games and activities were held like


treasure hunt, visit to the nearby woods, fun in
rain/water, special dinner and so on. Some of
the children also utilized some time to organize
their cupboards.
Needless to say, the children enjoyed this
experience enormously. We also observed the
formation of close friendships among the
children, the development of a better rapport
between students and staff and a boost in the
sense of ownership towards the school.

The idea came from the Numeracy and Logic
class where children have been engaged in a
shopping mall activity with empty pouches,
bottles, wrappers, etc. So a visit to an actual
super market was planned so that they are able

market authorities and the children were
grouped into three clusters. The tiny-tots were
free to explore the market freely. The older
ones observed the classification of goods like
groceries, bakery items, toiletries, dairy
products etc. and also saw how everything is
arranged systematically. Some were even seen
noting down prices in their notebooks! One staff
member of the super market had been spared
to respond to childrens queries.

issues relate to school functioning. In the first
meeting, some students raised the issue of
chocolate wrappers creating litter in and
around the school. Two students and a
teacher have taken the responsibility to
make chocolate wrapper bins to take care of
this. Another group decided to make plastic
and non-plastic waste-bins to take care of
other kinds of garbage.
This is only the beginning. As of now we are
still exploring this platform and trying to
understand its scope and power.

do English conversation in our class. Earlier they
were a bit hesitant to speak English, but soon
they started enjoying the class. It was very

New Language Faculty
We welcome Nidhi Solanki as the new

onstart, she has built strong friendships with

Stephney Steven DVaz, who had joined the
