A Public Art Project and Traveling Exhibition in the Dominican Republic Presented by USA artists Xaivier Ringer and David John Attyah
Perfiles y Patrones is a public art project and companion traveling exhibition focusing on the diverse stories and histories of the Dominican Republic. The project invites the public to interact and collaborate with artists from the USA and the Dominican Republic.
The project features eight traveling mural panels, which feature portraits of Dominican people from all walks of life. The panels are begun by contemporary artists, and then finished in collaboration with the public at community events around Santo Domingo. Dominican and North American artists will interpret the personal stories of individuals that represent different aspects of Dominican social and cultural life. The mural panels are then completed by the public at community events, allowing people to interact directly with art and artists and to explore ideas of Dominican collectivity.
The finished panels - produced in different venues - will finally be assembled into one gallery installation. The panels are designed to interlock into a single mural-sized piece.
Whats the goal of Perfiles y Patrones? The purpose of PyP is to use personal stories from various slices of Dominican life to form the foundation for public interaction. The project directors believe that art has the power to help communities visualize themselves. This ultimate goal of the project is to identify collective ideas of prosperity, community, connection and future, as they emerge from the stories and truths of Santo Domingo residents.
Who conceived this project? This project is conceived and coordinated by Santo Domingo-based artist Xaivier Ringer and Los Angeles-based artist David John Attyah. Ringer and Attyah share a common belief that artistic expression and public interaction together are powerful tools for actualizing community building. The goal of their effort is not merely to produce a work of art, but to produce profound creative experiences that help the public imagine and realize positive social change.

INFORMATION FOR ARTISTS
Contemporary artists who participate in Perfiles y Patrones are generously giving their time to a public art project.
1. Artists receive supplies to produce a portrait on the left or right half of a 7 x 4 painting panel.
2. Each artist is sent a series of photographs and the personal story of a Dominican resident who has agreed to be featured in PyP. Some artists may have the chance to meet their subject in person, and draw or paint them from life.
3. Artist are requested to complete a partial portrait of their subject on the left or right side of the panel. Artists are invited to interpret their subject in their own style, in painting, drawing or collage. Sample compositions will be sent to artists as a guide.
4. After completing their portrait, the artists return the panel to the PyP. Then, the panels travel to public art events where the public is invited to fill in the background of the panels.
5. Artists are absolutely invited - but not required - to paint with the public or to teach the public about the basics of drawing and painting at community events. Artists may choose to paint more on a panel, help the public paint, or engage the public in conversations about collectivity and prosperity in the DR.
6. Artists understand that the panel they painted is property of PyP, and will be exhibited at the discretion of PyP. Should a panel be sold, the terms are listed below. Artists receive a small honorarium for their participation.
7. Completed panels will be exhibited in various locations through Santo Domingo, and likely travel to the USA. Some venues will be public areas - like airports or libraries. Other venues may be private, like corporate plazas. The panels may also travel - at the discretion of Perfiles y Patrones - to commercial galleries.
8. If a panel is sold, 25% of the net proceeds will go to the artist who began the panel, 25% to Perfiles y Patrones to offset project costs, and 50% to a community based arts organization in Santo Domingo to benefit the public. PyP also has the discretion to donate panels to worthy organizations without charge.
9. Perfiles y Patrones is a mission-based art project that is based on the collective power of art. The project depends upon the integrity, honesty, patience and generosity of its partners.
INFORMATION FOR SPONSORS
PyP is a not-for-profit project that seeks to connect the public through art. This project is entirely funded by dedicated project sponsors who believe art is a powerful method to connect people across barriers and start conversation about our communities.
PyP seeks local sponsors. Sponsors can certainly provide money directly to cover project costs - via grants or direct donations - but PyP values in-kind donations of any size, by local businesses and residents. Perhaps you can provide some art materials, food at art events, or exhibition space in offices and businesses.
Sponsors are named in the PyP partner list, which is displayed everywhere the project travels. Sponsors who donate materials for panels, or offer to exhibit panels, will have their sponsorship engraved on the panel itself. PyP believes that sponsors are part of the life of each painting.
WAYS YOU CAN SPONSOR
Sponsor a panel: - each panel costs about $ DP 5,000 to fabricate. You can sponsor all or part of making a panel, and have the name of your organization engraved directly onto it.
Provide art supplies to let the pubic paint: each panel needs about $ DP 500 in art supplies to allow the public to paint alongside artists. You can make an in-kind donation of art materials. PyP provides a supply list so you can see the types of supplies we need.
Offer food at public events: If you own a restaurant or store, you can sponsor by providing water or food at PyP painting events. Donations of any size are appreciated.
Offer space to exhibit the project: The goal of PyP is to reach the public, both at painting events, and through exhibition. If you own a business, or work for corporation, you can be a sponsor by agreeing to exhibit all or part of PyP for a limited time.
Provide media support: If you are a photographer, videographer or media person, you can help by documenting events or publicizing PyP.
If you are an art collector, you can also acquire a panel for your collection. Please contact PyP for details.
Thanks to all for their support!
