S brought me a book Going to the Doctor and wanted me to read it for her. When I asked what she could see on the cover, she pointed to the doctor on the cover and said She is a doctor. As I said to S It is time to read this story book, you need to turn on your listening years and be quite when the story is going on. She then did the gesture as pretending to click on her ears and closing her mouth. S said I have two doctor bag at home, one with handle, another one not with handle. I asked her what she does with the doctor bags, she answered me I play doctor games, and Im a doctor. During reading the story, S responded to the books concept, she talked about her personal experiences and she was able to recognize numbers of doctor instruments (thermometer, stethoscope). S talked about the doctor instruments that she used when playing doctor game and her experience when she was sick. I have thermometer at my doctor bag, it for checking the mouth, when I play doctor game. When I get hurt, mummy will put her hand on head. It is so hot, then we will see the doctor, my doctor is Doctor Amy. She (Doctor Amy) give us prescription and medication, then Im okay. When Im sick, mt legs will be so tired, then mummy will take me to bed, then I will fell better when I wake up. I asked S Who is making appointment in this picture? S pointed to the mother and said The mummy is making appointment.
I asked S where will the thermometer apply on you? S pointed to her mount and arms then answered Sometimes it is on my ears or in my mouth.
I asked S What is the stethoscope for? S patted her chest and answered For checking your chest.
I asked S Where will you have your immunization (vaccine) on your body? S patted her arms and said On my arms, both arms. It hurts a bit, but just a bit.
Analyses: Identity S demonstrated strong sense of identity, and she confidently expressed her ideas and responded to the people with different roles in the story. Moreover, as S had mentioned, she had explored the identity of doctor when role play. Community S demonstrated a fundamental understanding of the role and responsibilities as doctors. She developed the understanding of the usage and purpose of several doctor instruments. Wellbeing S demonstrated her awareness of herself- health care. She showed that she felt secure and comfortable when interacting with educator, and she was willing to talk about her personal prior experiences and her families. Learning Through story time, Ss language skill and vocabulary can be enhanced through the interaction with educator and listening to the story. S has developed increasing knowledge about making appointment, the purposes and usages of several instruments and the affects of illness on her body. Communication S responded and listened to the storys context and tended to interact with the illustrations on the book. S interacted verbally and non-verbally with educator and had intensive conservations that related to the storys context. Relating to EYLF: Outcome 1: Children have a strong sense of identity 1.) S has demonstrated strong interest in dramatic role play, especially role play as doctor, and therefore, I will plan an role play activity for S. I will provide relate materials such as stethoscope and dress up clothes in dramatic area, it is for S to participate in social play and experiences different identities (patients, nurse or doctor) that relate to her interests.
