texture), measurement, and simple tests (hardness).
c.Use observation to compare the similarities and differences of texture, particle size, and color
in top soils (such as clay, loam or potting soil, and sand).
d. Determine how water and wind can change rocks and soil over time using observation and
research

Materials:
Interactive Whiteboard
iPads (10 total) with internet access
Currated Content List-Rocks
Physical Examples of the 3 different types of rocks
Socrative App
PicCollage App
Rubric for grading Collage
Access to Padlet website

Procedures:
1. The teacher will ask the students to share the information that they currently know about rocks
and minerals by posting their response on the app Padlet.-At this point, students may not have a
large amount of information, but this is a great way to see what they know so that the
information delivered is not redundant.
2. The teacher will ask the students to help her define a rock in their own words.
3. The teacher will guide students by adding to the definition to summarize for the class. This
will be displayed on the board for the duration of the lesson.
4. The teacher will display physical examples of the three different types of rocks.
5. The students will be given time to work in small groups and explore resources provided on
the curated list with teacher direction. The teacher will provide as much or little scaffolding
as needed.
6. After each resource, the teacher will stop for discussion and student reflection.
7. After students view the resources they will get good information on the three different types
of rocks.
8. The teacher will give the students general facts about the three different types of rocks on the
Socrative app in the form or True/False and Multiple Choice questions.
9. The students will use the app Socrative to respond in an interactive way. This will provide
clarity and examples for any students who are still unsure.
10. Lastly, the students will use information from all resources they viewed to create a picture
collage on the iPad app PicCollage that represents facts about the three different types of
rocks.
11. Students should be creative as possible. Their collage will be graded by the teacher using a
rubric.

12. Some students may need more direction with the app, if needed this will be provided
individually.
13. The students will use the app PicCollage to display their ideas about rocks in an effective
way.
14. This will be graded with a rubric by the classroom teacher.

Assessment:
The students will use the app PicCollage to display their facts about rocks.
This will be graded with a rubric by the classroom teacher.
