Comments or questions for Ms. Agpoon:

Thank you for completing this survey!
I surveyed my 3
rd
grade class. My class consists of twenty students, eleven boys and nine
girls. Only eight girls took the survey because one of the girls is placed in SPED resource so she
was not there to take it. I would have liked her to take it so I could have gotten her opinions on
writing. The ranges of writing levels in the classroom starts off as approaching the standards to
meeting with proficiency. The curriculum program is called Step Up to Writing. The
instructional strategies that I have been exposed to are whole class, small groups, and one on
one. My students are not part of the gifted and talented program yet, but when they become part
of it, they will have the opportunity to write the school newspaper. My mentor teacher uses
rubrics to assess the students writings.
My students did the performing arts survey before the writing student survey so they
were really excited for the writing survey. I initially wanted to do the four corners method in
their basketball court because it wouldve required them to be a little active, instead of sitting in
their chairs filling out a paper survey. But that wasnt the case. I wanted to do both surveys in
one day and I was going to be short on time, so I resorted to doing the paper survey. It worked
out okay because it was much quicker. This was the first time I found myself adjusting a
lesson because of time.
My instructions were to take out a pencil and a book. I had them take out a pencil and
not a pen because they cant fix it if they make a mistake with the pen. Complete the survey in
15 minutes, but if they finish early they have to read their books quietly until the whole class
finishes. Majority of them finished in 10 minutes. Only a few asked questions so I felt like they
could understand the questions and that the questions were straightforward.

My choices to the questions were either always, sometimes, or never. These were my
questions about their attitudes towards writing.

Question number one was if they liked to write, six answered always, nine answered
sometimes, and four answered never. The four that answered never are boys. There were more
girls that answered always compared to boys. My next question was if they thought writing was
hard, two answered always, twelve answered sometimes, and five answered never. There are a
few students who do not like to write because it takes too long. There are times when they need
to copy certain things on the board and I hear a few groan because they do not like writing. As
for the next question, which is if they think writing is boring, three answered always, five
answered sometimes, and eleven answered never. The three that answered always are boys. I
was starting to see the pattern in the results. There are a couple students whose favorite subject
isnt writing.

My next few questions were about their learning styles. I asked if they like to write at
school and at home. There are a few that like to write at home, but they prefer to write in school.
There was only one student who did not like to write in school or at home. Everyone likes to
write in a quiet place. Five dont really mind if it is quiet or not. There is one that likes to write
in a loud environment.
I asked
two questions
about what I
thought they
might have a
hard time on.
The questions
were if they had a difficult time coming up with ideas to write about and also if they have a hard
time spelling words. Only two have a difficult time coming up with ideas to write about. The
students have writing journals and they only have a few entries in there because the school year
just started. Some of the topics were a movie that they like and the summary of the play they
watched. My mentor teacher usually gives them a topic to write about so they do not really have
to think about what they
have to write about.
The students are
confident in spelling
words. My mentor

students a list of words to practice every week. They students have to rewrite the words three
times, create different words using the letters from the word and even count the syllabus.
The next series of questions were about their interest. I noticed that my students like to
talk about non-school related topics. The most common topics are about dinosaurs and football.
I decided to ask if they liked to write about animals and football. My prediction was right.
Majority likes to write about sports, both boys and girls. There are a few that sometimes like to
write about their family members. What stuck out to me was that there are five students that do
not like to write about their experiences. Im not sure if they understood what experiences
meant, but none asked about the question so Im guessing they did understand it.

I remember in elementary that every time I published a paper, I would always have to
draw a picture to go along with my story. My students do the same thing and they are up on the
walls. They wrote about The Korean Cinderella. I was curious if they liked to draw about the
topics they have to write about. I was also curious if they liked to write letters or notes. My
teacher once had a problem with students passing notes around the class, thats why I wanted to
know what they thought about writing letters or notes.

Last I wanted to know if my students want to become good writers. There were three
students that said they never want to become good writers. I know that they probably dont
understand or have difficult time writing so thats why they chose never. Eventually, they will
all want to become good writers. The last part of my survey was a section where they could
write a question or a comment for me. There were some questions and there were some
comments.

By the end of this semester, I want all of my students to choose to become good writers. I
plan to show them that being a good writer is essential because they will be writing for the rest of
their lives. I plan to integrate my performing arts lesson with my writing lesson. I hope to use the
performing arts lesson as a way for them to express themselves and then the writing to reflect on
what they did. I want my students to understand that writing may be difficult at times, but it can also
be fun. The only writing I have seen my students do was work with my mentor teacher to create a
MP paper. I havent seen them actually writing without my mentor teachers help. They copy what
she writes on the board. I plan to ask my mentor teacher to have me lead a mini writing lesson
where the students write about an experience they had and then draw a picture with the their writing
piece. This is if there is time to do it.
