Reflection of Philosophy of Education

I wrote my Philosophy of Education at the beginning of the education program. Some of my thoughts
have stayed the same, and some ideas have changed or developed. The ideas in my philosophy of education are
easy to implement into the classroom and I have already started using these ideas in my classroom as an intern. I
believe that teachers should always reflect on their teaching, and I practice this by making adjustments to my
lessons as well as my classroom management plan as I continue to grow as a teacher. I believe that the career of a
teacher is a life-long learning experience. Teachers are never done learning and continue to learn and grow with
each lesson and class.

Purpose of Education
I still believe the purpose of education is to ensure that every child is able to learn and prepare to be
successful for their future. It is also an opportunity for children to find the love of learning; the creativity,
curiosity, and the confidence they need to succeed. Education is also a place for children to grow socially,
mentally and emotionally with peers their own age. I have also learned that education is different for
every person, depending on how they learn. Education isnt just learning about a subject, it is participating
in the process of learning and being an active participant.

Curriculum
The curriculum should teach students about the real world they live in.
It should also teach students to become respectful, caring, people in the community. Curriculum includes
the subjects of Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Arts, and Physical Fitness. I have also learned
how important the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) is as a part of the curriculum. It not
only helps English Language Learners in the classroom, but all students in the classroom. As you
differentiate for each student, they are able to learn in the best way possible. It is also important to help
students to learn how to socialize with other students and teachers, and how to assess their own
behavior. Classroom management is a big part of the curriculum, which helps students engage in lessons
and focus.

Instructional Strategies
My first role as a teacher is to create a safe learning environment for every student. Students will feel
respected and be part of our classroom family. I will help students understand the importance of learning,
and help them guide their own learning experiences. I will use scaffolding to help my students explore and
learn. I will use many researched-based teaching strategies to help my students learn the best way for
them, and challenge them to reach their learning goals. In the education program I have learned about
many different strategies to help students understand the concepts. I have enjoyed learning about Kagan
Learning Strategies and implement them into my classroom on a daily basis. I have also used Gardners
theory of multiple intelligences to teach students through different learning styles.

Assessment
Assessment is essential in measuring the student understanding of the concepts being taught. I want my
students to be aware of their assessments and collaborate together to decide what needs they may have.
Assessment is also a great tool for me to be able to reflect on my lessons to make sure I am teaching so
that the students understand. Academic ability is monitored on a daily basis through observations, pre-
tests, asking questions, and post-tests. Students are able to show what they know through these
assessments and I am able to assess the lesson and change it if needed. I have now learned how to use
data from assessments and graph it. This helps me to see exactly where students need extra help, or more
challenge.

Conclusion
Through the process of becoming a teacher I have learned many things that will help me be a successful
teacher. I believe that home and school need to work together as a team to help children succeed. The
parent is the child's first teacher and we must work together to ensure children are learning to be
successful adults. I will collaborate with families and my colleagues to support the growth and
development of my students. It is also important to establish classroom routines and expectations to
help students learn organization and behavioral management. I understand how important a teacher is
in the life of a child. I have high expectations for my students and want to do all that I can to help them be
successful. I know that if I work with the student, and the family, we will all succeed together.
