Stratified- Divided into layers. My binder is stratified.
Paradoxically- A statement contrary to received opinion. He paradoxically stated that
standing is more tiring than walking.
Domestication- To train or adapt (an animal or plant) to live in a human environment and
be of use to humans. Nomadic herders domesticated horses.
Cosmopolitan- not limited to just one part of the world. The inauguration of Obama was
a cosmopolitan event.
Archaeologist- The study of past human life and culture by the recovery and examination
of remaining material evidence. The dinosaur bones were founded by an archaeologist
from China.
Protohumans- extinct hominid populations that had some but not all the features of
modern Homo sapiens. Protohumans are ancestors of the homo sapiens.
Ambiguous- having several possible meanings or interpretations. I gave the teacher an
ambiguous answer.
Anthropologist- The scientific study of the origin, the behavior, and the physical, social,
and cultural development of humans. I want to be an anthropologist when I grow up.
Proliferation- a rapid and often excessive spread or increase. I have fears that nuclear
weapons might proliferate.
Animism- the belief that natural objects have souls that may exist apart from their
material bodies. Some religions believe in animism.
Exogamous- marriage outside a specific tribe or similar social unit.
Autonomy- independence or freedom, as of the will or one's actions. The rebels
demanded autonomy from Spain.
Capacious- Capable of containing a large quantity; spacious or roomy. I have a
capacious room.
Egalitarian- belief in the equality of all people. Dr.King was an egalitarian
Ecstatic- subject to or in a state of ecstasy. I was ecstatic after I bought a new ipod.
Transcendent- going beyond ordinary limits.
Polis- a complex hierarchical society built around the notion of citizenship.
Recapitulated- to repeat. I recapitulated the events of yesterday
Oligarchy- a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a
dominant class or clique; government by the few.
Deforestation- getting rid of forests or trees. Poor planning deforested the area in ten
years.
Salinization- To treat with salt. It was believed that salinization prevents meat from
spoiling.
Epidemiological- the branch of medicine dealing with the incidence and prevalence of
disease in large populations and with detection of the source and cause of epidemics of
infectious disease.
