Should I be concerned???

Explorations in prokaryotes, cell replication and growth of populations

Escherichia coli (E. coli) are bacteria that normally live in the digestive system of healthy
animals (including humans. Yes we are classified as animals!). Most varieties of E. coli are
harmless or cause minor digestive issues (diarrhea). However, some varieties (E. coli 0157:H7)
can cause severe abdominal cramming, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. E. coli bacteria can very
easily travel from person to person by touching an infected person who does not wash their
hands properly and in turn touching your mouth, nose or eyes.
E. coli can reproduce as quickly as every 20 to 30 mins. Doubling their population with every
cellular division.
I have also noticed that the jar of hand sanitizer on my desk only kills 99.99% of germs. Well,
lets say that I have 1 million bacteria on my hands and I kill 99.99% of those bacteria, how many
do I have left? What if I cant wash my hands for 6 hours, what happens to those bacteria?

I WONDER. . SHOULD I BE CONCERNED???

Lets say that after killing 99.99% of the germs on my hands that you still have 100 E. coli
bacteria that are still alive. These bacteria reproduce every 30 minutes. What would
happen?
After 3 hours, how many bacteria are present?
After 6 hours?
On a piece of notebook paper,
1. Create a data table showing time vs # of bacteria.
2. Create a line graph that shows this growth on a graph? A line graph would be most
appropriate because you are showing a trend over time.
3. Answer the questionshould I be concerned. When answering this question use your
data to support your answer.
