Abstract

This project is related about reverse engineering (RE) and simulation process of thin can
using engineering software. The objectives of this project are to develop accurate CAD file of
the thin can by using conventional and non-conventional method which are practically by
direct measurement on the model and RE (optical system digitizer) respectively. The earlier
phase of the project involves data acquisition of the thin can geometry using manual and 3D
model captured by optical system digitizer. Based on the measurement, a 3D CAD file
developed using CATIA V5 Software from the manual collected data while another RE
approached by using Konica Minolta 3D Digitizer and undergone several important steps
before the CAD file produced. In producing geometry of the thin can through RE, Polygon
Editing Tool Software (PET) used before the geometry converted and rebuild using CATIA V5
Software. The next phase of the project involved Finite Element (FE) Modelling and
Simulation using the CAD data from the RE approached. Both of the CAD data geometries
meshed in ANSYS Workbench Software and through the simulation of the static impact as to
ensure the geometry of both of it valid and accepted. As the result, the RE process using
direct measuring and optical system digitizer were slightly different but both of its still
acceptable for manufactured.
