Outline of Unit:
The Year 5 Curriculum provides a requirement that students are given the opportunity to develop
skills to manage and establish relationships. This unit of work gives students the opportunity to
authentically engage in the area of respectful citizens and broaden their knowledge of how to act
positively and with respect to avoid conflict. The Curriculum supports students to develop
knowledge, understanding and skills to create opportunities and take action to enhance their own
and others' health, wellbeing and safety participation. Students develop skills to manage their
emotions, understand the physical and social changes that are occurring for them and examine how
the nature of their relationships changes over time (Australian Health Curriculum, 2014).
The unit of work is designed for students to gradually become more independent throughout the 3
weeks. The lessons encompass the need for students to initially be directed to and guided through
the expected outcomes and then be given the opportunity to self-direct and achieve through peer
support and individual motivation.
The learning in this unit circles around students seeking research from wider community members
and recording their responses to a series of questions that students create themselves. This will then
give students the opportunity to create and edit a video that can then be published to educate lower
grades in the school.
Students will be introduced to the topic and gradually work their way to creating the proposed
movie in groups of 4. The introduction will see students being exposed to a variety of sources that
detail individual approaches to being a respectful community member.
