Throughout the Western Hemisphere there are only 8 mangrove swamps which
support various organisms and maintain the environment and its conditions. Mangrove
swamps are located where the land and the sea meet, they consist of mangrove trees
which have a special adaptation in order to survive in the salt water conditions. For
example, the vascular tissue of the mangrove trees are also able to excrete or exclude salt
when necessary. Mangrove trees have aerial roots that rise above the surface of the water,
allowing it to perform respiration, which it is unable to do underwater due to the salinity of
the sea water. The mangrove swamps, although thought to be malodorous or unpleasant is
actually very important because of its biodiversity. Aerial roots of these trees, for example,
provide a home for red algae who are able to retain water when tides are low. All of the
biodiversity within the mangrove swamps, however, are at risk, mainly due to human
actions. Many of the mangrove trees are cut down by humans for production, the damage

ThoughtsontheTopic
The loss of mangrove swamps would result in the loss of biodiversity, as humans
continue to abuse the environment without concern for the long term effects, more problems
will arise. I believe that it is important to keep the mangrove swamps protected because of
its frailty. The ecosystem provides a home for many species and organisms such as lizards
and beetles among many more. The topic arises a concern as mangrove swamps not only
areimportantlocationsofbiodiversity,buttheyalsoprovidestabilityforthecoastline.
