What are carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are your bodys
main source of energy. A
carbohydrate is a chemical
composed of simple sugars.

What molecule of food is
produced by plants in
photosynthesis?
Glucose
(simple carbohydrate)
Where are some simple
carbohydrates found?
Any fruits: apples, oranges
Combine several of these
simple carbohydrates you get
complex carbohydrates.

Where are these found?
They are found in potatoes,
things made from grains (bread,
pasta)
What are Lipids (fats)?
Fats are energy-storage
nutrients.

Fats are needed to store and
transport vitamins, produce
hormones, keep skin healthy,
and provide insulation.

Fats and oils are forms of
lipids.

Fats are solid at room
temperature and oils are
liquid at room
temperature.
What are some examples
of Lipids (fats)?
Butter, olive oil, grease
What are proteins?
Proteins are nutrients used
to build and repair your
body. Proteins are found in
body fluids, muscle, bone,
and skin.

What are some examples
of proteins?
Meats, eggs, nuts, cheese,
yogurt
Which would be the best
food to eat hours before
an athletic contest or
performance?
Complex Carbohydrates like
pasta or potatoes.
How does your body use
this food?
Your body breaks these down into
simple sugars (glucose) that can
be used in cellular respiration to
make ATP (energy).
What molecule are our
bodies trying to make
more of by eating these
foods?
ATP (Energy)
Which would be the best
food to eat at half time
or between performances?
Oranges, apples, any fruit
Why?
They are already a simple sugar
and can be used right away to
do cellular respiration to make
ATP (energy)
Which would be the best
food to eat after the
athletic contest or
performance to rebuild
muscles and cells lost during
the activity?
